Organizing committee of NCAA championship hosting spirit competition with cash prize

Published: Thursday, December 27, 2012 2:12 PM CST
Team Frisco the local organizing committee behind the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision title game, and the Frisco Chamber of Commerce are calling on all Frisco businesses to show off their team spirit in a new contest.

The spirit contest, which has a 5 p.m. deadline on Jan. 3, will feature a $1,000 cash prize.

Just ten days are left until the rematch between the Sam Houston State Bearkats and the North Dakota State University Bison at FC Dallas Stadium for the championship game, which will kick off noon Jan. 5.

"We're hoping to grow this friendly competition this year," said Mayor Maher Maso, honorary chairman of Team Frisco. "We hope even more businesses will decorate their store windows and their employees will dress in team colors, making our visitors feel right at home. We'll be hosting about 21,000 football fans inside the stadium -- not to mention those tailgating or watching the nationally televised game -- and we want to be the best hosts we can be. So show your spirit, Frisco!"

Team Frisco -- which is made up of the City of Frisco, the Frisco Economic Development Corporation, the Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, Hunt Sports Group, Southland Conference and the Frisco Chamber of Commerce -- is offering a $1,000 cash prize to the business that shows the most spirit in the form of decorations, window dressing or dressing their employees in competing college colors during Game Week.

Teams arrive Jan. 2, signaling the start of game week, which runs until the game's kickoff. To enter, post a photo (one entry only) on the City of Frisco's Facebook page by 5 p.m. Jan. 3.

Entries will be evaluated by number of Facebook "likes" as well as judges' comments.

"Wear your favorite team colors, decorate your storefront windows or display a 'welcome' message on your business marquee," said Tony Felker, president and CEO of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce. "Let's show our visiting football fans our community spirit and how we do business in Frisco."

The 2013 game marks the third year in a three-year contract for Frisco to host the championship. Earlier this month, the NCAA announced Frisco's FC Dallas Stadium will host the game another three years, through 2016.
