Eagles fourth in nation

With its second Class 5A Division I State Championship in tow, the Allen football team now stands among the nation's elite programs for the 2012 season.

The Rivals100 national rankings justified that sentiment by tabbing the Eagles fourth in the country after toppling Houston Lamar, 35-21, on Saturday.

Allen, which finished the season at 15-1 overall, became just one of nine programs to win multiple Class 5A championships since the classification was berthed in 1980.

A litany of other statewide teams cracked the rankings as well, including two of Allen's playoff foes from this season in DeSoto (No. 7), Mesquite (34) and Skyline (36).

To put the difficulty of Allen's schedule into perspective, the Eagles also competed against Southlake Carroll (14), Coppell (52) and Cedar Hill (58) during the regular season, meaning that six of Allen's 16 games came against teams that finished the year ranked in the nation's top 60.

Americans score OT win

The Allen Americans dealt a 3-2 overtime decision the way of the first-place Wichita Thunder on Saturday.

Scotty Howes sealed the victory on a game-winning power-play goal with 90 seconds remaining in overtime that was set up by Anthony Maiani. The goal marked Howes' second of the night, raising the forward's total to 19 on the season.

Howes also leads Allen with 30 points on the season, one better than Maiani who contributed three assists in Saturday's win. Among those helpers was a setup to Trevor Ludwig, who scored his fourth goal of the year.

The win set pulled the Americans (18-5-2, 38 points) to within one point of top-seeded Wichita (18-8-3, 39) in the Central Hockey League standings.

Allen returns home Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. showdown with the Fort Worth Brahmas.

Tourney time

The Allen basketball teams will cap their respective tournament schedules this week, with both squads traveling off the Metroplex radar.

The Lady Eagles won't even be competing stateside, venturing north to Admore, Okla. for the Ardmore Holiday Festival.

Enjoying a taste of the Oklahoma basketball scene, Allen will be one of two Texas teams alongside Burleson competing in the eight-team field. The Lady Eagles will carry a two-game winning streak with wins over Lewisville and Coppell into today's 12:20 p.m. tipoff against Durant in the first round.

Meanwhile, Allen's boys squad will travel south for the Leander ISD Christmas Classic. The Eagles have righted the ship for three straight wins after taking decisions over Lake Highlands, Rockwall Heath and North Mesquite and look to build on that Friday when they meet Killeen Shoemaker at 3:30 p.m.

Allen will round out pool play that evening at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Cedar Ridge before Saturday's bracket play commences.

Candidates must be ex-athletes, employees, teams or supporters of AISD. They must have graduated from Allen at least 10 years ago and demonstrated good character throughout their post-high school athletic career. If a nominee is deceased, a representative of his/her family may accept the honor.

Nomination forms can be found at: allenisd.org.

Nominations should include as much detail as possible to help choose the best candidates. The selection committee will name recipients at an annual AISD Hall of Honor banquet.
