12-5A BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: Mesquite picks up first two wins of the season
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
It has been a tough stretch to the season for Mesquite.
The Skeeters have played some of the area's heavyweight teams and they have done so with one arm tied behind their backs, with several key players still involved with the football team's playoff run.
But with Mesquite being bounced from the football playoffs with a loss to Allen in the area finals, those players are making the transition from the gridiron back to the court, and it is already paying dividends, as they won two of three games last weekend at the Jesuit Knights of Columbus Tournament.
Mesquite had opened the tournament with a tough 49-46 loss to Episcopal School of Dallas despite nine points each from Alex Cooper and A.J. Johnson.
North Mesquite improved to 4-3 on the season by closing on a high note at the GISD Curtis Culwell Invitational over the weekend.
The Stallions won their finale by edging crosstown rival Poteet on Saturday with a 43-42 win.
Behind 16 points from Mike Williams and eight from Norman Alexander, North Mesquite jumped to a 22-13 halftime lead and then held off a furious Pirate rally.
Williams scored 19 points against Little Elm on Friday but he did not get much help in a 46-39 loss.
That was not the case in the opener on Thursday, when Alexander scored 16 points, Williams added 14 and Ryan Bradley chipped in with 12, but it was still not enough in a 53-50 loss to Lakeview.
North Mesquite started strong with a 15-5 run, but was outscored 27-12 during the next two frames, including a four-point third quarter. The Stallions kicked up the offense with 23 points in the fourth, but it fell just short.
Horn played three tough games at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Tournament over the weekend, but came away with just one win to show for it.
That came on Friday, when Anthony Sharps scored 24 points and John McMillier and Zach Charles each added 13 in a 70-64 win over W.T. White.
That result, though, was sandwiched between a pair of setbacks, including a tough 72-71 loss to Denton on Saturday. Behind 29 points from Sharp and 17 from Alan Hodge, the Jaguars led by three going to the fourth quarter but could not hold on.
Horn had opened the tournament with a 59-50 loss to Hebron in which it was outscored 35-20 during the middle stages of the game. Hodge scored 11 while Adrian Chevis chipped in with nine to pace the offense.
