Celina City Council members Terry, McCally file to run for mayor: Two-candidate race to fill unexpired term

Published: Friday, November 30, 2012 12:08 PM CST
Celina City Council members Sean Terry and Todd McCally have each filed to run for the unexpired term of former mayor Jim Lewis, who resigned in November in the midst of a three-year term that ends May 2014.

Terry and McCally were the only candidates to file for the Feb. 2 election before Tuesday's deadline to have their name placed on the ballot, though write-in applications will be accepted through Sunday. Early voting for the election will begin Jan. 16.

In order to win the election, a candidate must receive a majority of votes cast. If another candidate enters the race and everyone running fails to receive the needed majority on election day, a run-off will be held between the top two vote recipients on March 23.

As mayor pro tem, McCally is currently handling mayoral duties. He ran unopposed and was first elected to city council in 2008 to serve a three-year term that ended in 2010. He was elected to a second term in May.

McCally is the president and founder of an Internet marketing firm based in Celina that offers search engine optimization and other services to improve the online visibility of its clients.

“While I don't have an agenda per se, I do have a vision to keep Celina rich in heritage and family values,” he said. “After all, that's why most of us moved here. As elected officials, we can't stop a land owner from selling his or her land to a willing buyer, but what we can control is the quality of the structure the new land owner wants to build.

“With unanimous approval from the current council to be mayor pro tem, I feel like I have the full support of the council to lead as mayor of Celina. Since serving as acting mayor beginning Nov. 1, I see that the job requires 10-20 hours per week and I have the time to commit to the city and its citizens. Having a business in Celina makes me available at a moments notice if I'm needed. I would be proud to serve the citizens as their mayor.”

Terry is currently serving his second council term. He was elected to his first term in 2008 with 80 percent of the vote in a race against challenger Gene Christensen. He was re-elected to council while running unopposed in 2010.

Terry currently works as a regional manager for Kinloch Equipment, which sells environmental products and accessories for sewer cleaning, street sweeping and other professions. He also spent 11 years as a member of the Celina Fire Department before resigning as a captain.

“I am running for mayor because I feel that I am the best person for the job,” Terry said. “We are in a major growing phase right now and we need to have people on the council that want to preserve the rich traditions that Celina has grown up with. We need to grow the city in such a way that our citizens will be happy to call it home.

“Having two kids in the Celina school system, I see how important it is to have great communication with the school and the city. The developments we approve and the infrastructure we put in place will play a great roll in how our school system can grow. Being on the fire department allowed me to work with every department within the city of Celina, from the public works department, to the parks department, to the city manager’s office. We have a lot of great people working and living in the city of Celina, and as mayor I want to continue laying the groundwork that makes the citizens of Celina proud to call Celina their home.”
