Eagles make early statement

Having won seven of the last eight dual or UIL State Championships, Allen is establishing a dynasty in Texas wrestling.

That dynasty doesn't appear to be slowing.

The Eagles opened the season last Thursday with a tri-meet in Oklahoma and then competed in the Mid-America Nationals on Friday and Saturday.

On the strength of pins from Bo Nickal, Matt Meyer and Mason Smout, Allen began with a 36-30 win over Tuttle, the four-time defending Class 4A Oklahoma State Champions and No. 14 team in the country.

After a 38-21 loss to No. 21 Broken Arrow, the Eagles rebounded at the Mid-America Nationals.

Nickal (160 pounds) won his weight and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. Second-place finishes were recorded by Daniel Cartagena (138), A.J. Hinkle (145) and Meyer (182).

Allen, which beat Rockwall in its first home match, 56-11, is back in action Friday and Saturday at the Kansas City Stampede in Missouri.

The Eagles are now ranked No. 9 nationally by flowrestling.com.

Nwanebu a MaxPreps All-American

Lovejoy senior Ebony Nwanebu's efforts during her final season with the Lady Leopards have been recognized on a national level.

The USC signee and middle blocker was named to the MaxPreps 2012 All-American first team.

During her 2012 campaign, Nwanebu recorded 639 kills, 49 aces, 115 blocks (62 solo) and 306 digs. Nwanebu, also a finalist for the MaxPreps Player of the Year, was an integral cog in Lovejoy's 48-4 record and fifth consecutive UIL state title.

Last month, Nwanebu was named Class 4A State Tournament MVP, having won the same honor in 3A two years prior.

Calef named Player of the Year

Allen resident Mike Calef has been selected as the Texas Golf Association's North Region Player of the Year.

Calef, and other zone winners, were selected by the TGA Championship Committee based on points awarded for top finishes in specific regional, statewide and USGA national championships.

Leopards in Avery Air tourney

The Lovejoy boys basketball team won't have to travel far for its annual holiday tournament.

The Leopards will take to the court at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 28 against McKinney from McKinney Boyd for the first of two days in the fourth annual Avery Air Invitational. Lovejoy is part of an eight-team field that includes Boyd, McKinney North, McKinney, Rockwall, Little Elm, Richardson Pearce and Frisco Centennial.

"Fans are going to be able to see 24 outstanding games in 30 hours while seeing their favorite teams participate six times," said Mark Stafford, 151 Sports Marketing representative. "If you enjoy basketball then this is a great event to attend, no matter if you have a rooting interest or not."

Lovejoy was the host site for the inaugural tournament in 2009, with Plano Senior laying claim to the event the past two seasons.
