More accolades for Lovejoy

Weeks after concluding the volleyball season, Lovejoy continues to bring in accolades.

After winning its fifth straight state title and first Class 4A State Championship, the Lady Leopards were ranked No. 12 in the final MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings.

Lovejoy also received individual honors.

Those went to seniors Ebony Nwanebu and Mallorie Puckett, who have been named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State team.

Pierce up for Landry Award

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers is presenting the area's top high school football player with The Landry Award.

Allen senior Oliver Pierce is a finalist.

Pierce is one of five candidates alongside McKinney Boyd's Bryan Driskell, Arlington Martin's Kyle Hicks, Southlake Carroll's Kenny Hill and Jesuit's Jake Oliver.

The honor recognizes the Metroplex's top high school player. The recipient is chosen by a panel of former coaches, players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

The winner will be announced at the awards presentation, which is 6 p.m. Monday from Communities Foundation of Texas (5500 Caruth Haven Lane, Dallas, 75225).

Babe Laufenberg and Bill Jones will host.

Americans encounter rough week

Running roughshod through the league for the first two months of the CHL season, the Allen Americans have hit their first patch of adversity.

Allen went 1-2 in the past week.

The Americans lost to the Tulsa Oilers, 5-4, Friday and the Arizona Sundogs, 4-2, Saturday before breaking back into the win column Sunday by defeating the Fort Worth Brahmas, 4-2. Allen got goals from Jarret Lukin, Anthony Maiani (on a five-game point streak), Brian McMillin and Adam Pineault in the victory.

The team caps its four-game homestand Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. with respective games against the Denver Cutthroats and Wichita Thunder.

Hall of Honor nominations

Though the Allen ISD began enshrining people into its Hall of Honor when Eagle Stadium opened, the district is still seeking future nominees.

Candidates must be ex-athletes, employees, teams or supporters of AISD. They must have graduated from Allen at least 10 years ago and demonstrated good character throughout their post-high school athletic career. If a nominee is deceased, a representative of his/her family may accept the honor.

Nomination forms can be found at: allenisd.org.

Nominations should include as much detail as possible to help choose the best candidates. The selection committee will name recipients at an annual AISD Hall of Honor banquet.

Winter Games of Texas near

For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state's largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County.

The event is set for Jan. 18-20, 2013.

Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year's event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).

While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion will be Jan. 19-20 at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West.

Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-Aug. 4.

Leopards in Avery Air tourney

The Lovejoy boys basketball team won't have to travel far for its annual holiday tournament.

The Leopards will take to the court at McKinney Boyd on Dec. 28 for the first of two days as entrants in the fourth annual Avery Air Invitational. Lovejoy is part of an eight-team field that includes Boyd, McKinney North, McKinney, Rockwall, Little Elm, Richardson Pearce and Frisco Centennial.

"Fans are going to be able to see 24 outstanding games in 30 hours while seeing their favorite teams participate six times," said Mark Stafford, 151 Sports Marketing representative. "If you enjoy basketball then this is a great event to attend, no matter if you have a rooting interest or not."

Lovejoy was the host site for the inaugural tournament in 2009, with Plano Senior laying claim to the event the past two seasons.
