Christmas event
Flower Mound United Methodist Church invites the community to experience the joy of Christmas at a live nativity Friday.
The annual event, held at the church under the Flower Mound water tower on the corner of Bruton Orand Boulevard and FM 1171, will include family-friendly activities that are free for all. Activities include a Christmas Pageant from 6-6:30 p.m. with refreshments and a live nativity from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
First Choice Power has teamed up with Keep Lewisville Beautiful to bring energy efficiency to the residents of Lewisville through its "Reduce Your Use" grant program. First Choice Power has awarded KLB a $2,000 grant for the purpose of educating the community about conserving energy and passing along energy savings to Lewisville residents.
The grant will allow KLB to purchase CFL bulbs for an energy savings program to reduce electrical costs, usage and wattage citywide. Keep Lewisville Beautiful is giving away multipacks of CFL light bulbs to Lewisville residents on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last at the KLB office, 101 W. Main St. Suite 102, starting Dec. 1 at the KLB open house during Holiday at the Hall and the Old Town Holiday Stroll. A Lewisville drivers license or utility bill to show proof of residency must be provided to obtain the free eight-pack of CFL light bulbs. One pack will be issued per household.

Holiday Yard of the Month nominations sought
Keep Lewisville Beautiful is accepting nominations through Saturday for holiday yard of the month. KLB will judge residential yards in the following categories: most beautiful, most creative and best of season. A photo submission is required for all nominations and will be put on the KLB website.

Many holiday activities planned at LLELA throughout December
There are several holiday events set for the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area.
Homestead Christmas will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Residents can enjoy a tour of the historic Minor-Porter Log House, make a corn husk doll or an ornament to take home to a Christmas tree, create a hand-dipped candle, enjoy seasonal music and snacks and more. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through the structures. Visitors are welcome to arrive at any time during the open hours and join in at their own pace. There is no additional fee for this activity beyond regular admission to LLELA.
Go trout fishing starting on Friday. The Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife will stock rainbow trout in the Elm Fork below Lewisville Lake Dam three times this winter, Friday, Jan. 11 and March 1. There are always plenty of fish in the river, but the trout are a special winter treat.
Take a night-time stroll under a Christmas moon from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 28. Howling coyotes, hooting owls and other nocturnal sounds will provide an out-of-the-ordinary hiking experience as our guides lead you down the Redbud Trail. No flashlights are necessary. Ages 5 years and up. Registration is required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu. The hike is $7 per person.
Enjoy a family hike and story time from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 29. Take a walk to search for animal tracks and signs and leave some edible treats along the trail for wildlife. This story-time, activity, and hike is appropriate for all ages. Registration is required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu. The activity is $7 per person; children 5 years and under free.
Free services available
In recognition of the service and sacrifice of veterans, Behavioral Health & Family Services of Lewisville is partnering with the national nonprofit organization Homecoming for Veterans to offer free mental health services, including neurotherapy, to all veterans in the Dallas/Fort Worth area facing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) challenges. Attorney to speak at VNA
Elder law attorney Leighton Hilton will be the featured speaker at Tuesday's hospice family luncheon hosted by Ann's Haven VNA. Hilton will speak on "Is your will or trust ready for the new year?"
The luncheon is from noon to 1 p.m. at the Denton Elks Lodge, 228 East Oak St. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling Molly Harrison, Ann's Haven VNA bereavement coordinator, at 940-349-5900.
Ann's Haven VNA hospice family luncheons offer supportive company from friendly and understanding people to individuals who have suffered the loss of a loved one.

Grief Recovery Support Group
If you've lost someone close to you, or know someone who has, call the Grief Recovery Support Group to find out information about the group's weekly grief share seminar/support group.
A new series began Sept. 20 and meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 1401 Cross Timbers Road in Flower Mound.

Newcomers club meetings set
The Greater Lewisville Newcomers Club was organized in 1975 to promote friendships, provide activities and social contacts and foster interest in the civic affairs of the community. Membership is open to new and existing residents of the communities in the Greater Lewisville area. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month from September thru May, at 9:30 a.m., at the Lewisville Church of Christ, 901 College Parkway in Lewisville.

Library group sets meetings
The Lewisville Public Library Friends of the Family meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at the library.
Spirithorse International program
Spirithorse International in Corinth announces its newest program, Spirithorses for Heroes, which is designed to serve wounded American warriors from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Utilizing its award-winning methods for rehabilitation, Spirithorse will provide free equine-assisted healthcare sessions to physically and mentally wounded veterans commencing Sept. 4 at its headquarters facilities in Corinth.
Spirithorse currently is the largest center for equine-assisted healthcare in the world, serving over 400 people with special needs free of charge each week.
Additionally, Spirithorse has 70 licensed centers worldwide that serve approximately 5,000 clients with special needs each week.

KLB seeks nominations
Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) recognizes one residential and one business each month from April through October for the "Yard of the Month." KLB is looking for nominations. All nominations must be in by the 20th of each month. Photos of each property will be displayed on KLB's website by the 25th of each month for voting.

Flower Mound Walking Women
The Flower Mound Walking Women meet-up group is a free all women's walking group that walks various trails in Flower Mound. The group encourages those interested to bring their socialized dog. Volunteers needed to help nursing home residents
The North Central Texas Council of Governments' (NCTCOG) Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program has immediate need for warm-hearted volunteers to help residents of nursing and assisted living facilities in Denton and Collin Counties. Ombudsmen advocate for residents' rights including, but not limited to, dependable and consistent care and an environment that promotes the residents' dignity, self-determination and communication.
Volunteer Ombudsmen also receive and investigate complaints made by, or on behalf of, residents or their families. Since many residents do not receive regular visitors or have close relatives, it may be difficult for them to enlist advocates. Volunteer Ombudsmen serve as advocates for all residents, connecting them to their broader communities, affirming their rights, and assisting them in resolving concerns.
No prior experience is required to serve as a volunteer ombudsman, but volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and complete a free training course that consists of both classroom study and training at local nursing homes, lasting up to 34 contact hours. After training, volunteers serve an internship, working two to three hours per week in their assigned facility. Hours are flexible and are determined by each volunteer. Training begins in late August and will be held locally.
