Dr. William Edward Hooper

Mesquite resident Dr. William Edward Hooper, 88, died Dec. 2.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at Laurel Oaks Funeral Home in Mesquite, with interment to follow in Laurel Oaks Memorial Park.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mildred, who died one year ago.
He is survived by sister, Eloise Lumpkin; sons, Thomas and John and their wives, Becky and Debby; daughter, Bonnie Bunn and husband, Roger; and granddaughters, Ann, Natalie, Maddison and Kelly.
Bill graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy and served in WWII. He attended the University of Alabama graduating with a BA in Music. Other degrees include an MA in Administrative Education, Masters in Music and Ph.D. in Administration and Curriculum.
His career in education started in 1948, moving to Mesquite in 1955 as band director; then Director of Fine Arts, supervising art, music and theater programs for MISD. Dr. Hooper was instructor and director of the Millette Amateur Circus and Scout Troop Leader for many years, including accompanying Scouts to Philmont Ranch twice.
In the '60s he did psychedelic light shows for rock bands in the Dallas area. Bill served as an Elder, Adult Class teacher and chaired the Christian Education Committee at the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas.
