10-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: Eagles impressive at Garland Tournament
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Rowlett's success at last weekend's GISD Curtis Culwell Invitational was twofold.
The Eagles not only posted a 3-1 record to move to .500 on the season, but they also knocked off three future 11-5A opponents, sending a message with district play slated to start next week.
Rowlett's (6-6) lone hiccup was in the opener on Thursday when it suffered a 60-50 loss to Highland Park.
Dominique Oliver led Rowlett with 21 points, while Taylee Alexander and Lydia Williams each added eight.
The Eagles' sweep of GISD mates started on Friday with a 69-16 blasting of North Garland. The Eagles used a 17-2 run in the second quarter to take a 31-6 halftime lead and it got no closer from there. Mersades Carter and Oliver each scored 13 points to pace a balanced offensive effort.
Rowlett won a pair of games on Saturday over Lakeview and Naaman Forest.
Alexander scored 13 points and the Eagles went on a 14-5 run late to pull out a 40-33 victory over the Patriots.
The contest with the Rangers was also close at the end. Rowlett seemed in control after holding Naaman Forest to two points in the second quarter to take a 27-14 lead.
But the Rangers chipped away, closing with an 11-4 spurt that fell just short in the Eagles' 44-42 victory. Oliver once again led the way with a game-high 19 points.
Sachse had a rougher time at the GISD Tournament, dropping two of its three games.
The Mustangs closed the event with a 55-47 loss to Highland Park on Saturday. Monica Dorsey scored 18 points and Courtney Blankenship added 10 in the losing effort.
Sachse lost a similar game on Friday, as it could not quite make a big enough charge late in a 51-46 loss to Pearce, despite 11 points from Lorian Benjamin.
The Mustangs' (5-7) lone win came on Thursday when Dorsey and Blankenship scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, and Sachse outscored Wolfforth Frenship 22-9 during the second and third quarters on their way to a 41-30 win.
