Third Time a Charm For Team Scream
By Keith Dlott
The third time proved to be the charm for Plano Youth Soccer's Team Scream. After losing two consecutive championship games, the under 10 girls team won the Fall championship, marching their way through the playoffs with 4-0, 5-1 and 4-1 victories.
After completing the regular season with an 8-2 record, the Scream finished in 3rd place, making the path to the championship a difficult task. In the semi-finals, Scream played a team it had not beat in eight previous attempts, including the past two championship games.
In the championship game, Scream got on the board first and led 1-0 at the half. The opposing Cheetahs, the regular season champions, equalized the game just into the second half with an amazing direct kick off a foul from 30 yards away.
Team Scream was originated by Coach Duane Newman when the girls were three and four years old playing mini-soccer. They evolved over the years into an incredible extended family. The kids, coaches, parents, friends and relatives crowd the sidelines for each game. More than 50 people represented the Scream nation for the championship game.
"It just goes to show that if you create a fun family environment while instilling the basics of soccer into the girls what can happen," said head coach Duane Newman.
"We are always pushing the girls to play their very best, focusing on the foundation and challenging them to improve their games with each and every practice and game," added assistant coach Keith Dlott.
Scream will represent PYSA in the North Texas Soccer Association's Tournament of Champions later this month.
