We are Spartans: Dreyer signs with San Jose State

Published: Friday, November 23, 2012 7:57 PM CST
Plano West senior Casey Dreyer trains at the University of Gymnastics in Plano, so it only stands to reason that she would get the opportunity to continue her gymnastics career at the university level.

That dream became reality last Friday night when Dreyer signed with San Jose State.

On hand for the ceremony were Dreyer's coaches Helen Verucchi and Anatoli Toropov.

"Casey works very hard," Verucchi said, "and she will bring great talent to the San Jose State team."

Dreyer's previous accomplishments suggest the same thing.

Now a Level 10 gymnast, the West senior was on the 2005 and 2006 TOPS National Teams. Advancing her skills as she aged, Dreyer (who previously trained at Elite Champion Gymnastics) was a Level 9 qualifier at the Western Nationals in 2007 and has twice advanced to the Level 10 National Championships.

In 2008, Dreyer was third on the balance beam at the Region III Championships.

In 2010, she won beam and placed second in the all-around at the Level 10 Texas State Championships and finished third at the Region 3 Championships to qualify for the Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships, where she placed eighth on beam and 13th all-around.

Dreyer, who has a 3.97 GPA at West, continued her ascension this season by placing second on floor exercise (9.500), fourth on vault (9.475) and fourth in the all-around (36.650) at the 2012 Level 10 Texas State Championships.

Dreyer is joined by Rachel Heinl to comprise the Spartans' signing class.

"I am very excited for [Heinl and Dreyer] to come to San Jose State," said Wayne Wright, Spartans head coach. "They are both exceptional all-around athletes and will help our team continue to progress. More specifically, they have the skills on uneven bars to increase our difficulty significantly."

But Wright doesn't expect the payoff to stop there.

"While they will contribute to our team in the gym," he said, "the girls are both quality student-athletes who will add to our team in the classroom as well."

Four more gymnasts sign

Dreyer was not the only gymnast from Plano to sign a National Letter of Intent last week.

The city had four others.

Not surprisingly, three came from Plano-based Spring Creek Academy with Jessica Howe (California), Briley Casanova (Michigan) and Sophia Lee (Stanford) advancing to continue their careers in College.

Joining Howe at California will be Plano East's Dana Ho.
