Covenant Christian, the No. 1 ranked football team in TAPPS Division III, ran roughshod over McKinney Christian Academy in a 47-0 rout Friday night.

It was only through one quarter that the teams seemed evenly matched. After the Mustangs' second punt of the night, the Cougars took over at their 31 yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, Donovan Jeanne broke several tackles and rambled 61 yards to put Covenant on top 6-0, but the extra-point attempt failed when it hit the right upright.

That score held through the end of the first quarter, but the game was never close after that as the Cougars went on to score three more touchdowns in the second quarter. Covenant took advantage of good field position at MCA’s 37 yard line and drove down to score on a 9-yard run from Micah Lutz. The two-point conversion attempt failed on an incomplete pass.

On the Mustang’s next possession, an interception by Covenant’s Garrett gave them the ball at the 31 yard line. The Cougars were able to use the miscue and drove the ball 69 yards to score. The touchdown came on a 17-yard reception by Austin Troup. The point after by Brooks Friedman was good to make it 19-0.

MCA’s next possession ended with a punt to Covenant’s 27 yard line. Again, the Cougar’s running game dominated play as they marched the ball the length of the field, with the score coming on Trey Jackson’s 21-yard catch with only 12 seconds left in the half. The extra point made it 26-0 heading into the break.

Covenant picked up where they left off in the second half and used a string of seven consecutive pass completions and a dominant running game to seal the victory. A 65-yard drive to open the half culminated with Jackson again scoring on a 3-yard reception to make it 33-0.

After taking over from the Mustangs at their own 47 yard line, the Cougars again took the ball down to score on a tipped pass to Jeanne from 16-yards out. The Cougar juggernaut managed to score once again late in the third quarter on an 18-yard run by quarterback Kade Thomas. Friedman’s fifth point after made the final score 47-0.

A continuous clock in the fourth quarter hastened the end of the game.

The Cougar’s defense held the normally potent Mustang offense in check all night, limiting them to only three first downs and 79 yards total offense. The Cougars racked up 453 yards of total offense with 271 yards on the ground and 182 yards through the air. McKinney Christian’s record is now at 3-4 for the season and 0-1 in district. Covenant's record stands at 7-0 and 2-0 in district.

The Mustangs host the Legacy Christian Eagles next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at McKinney North.
