Poteet boys take second at 10-4A cross country meet

Published: Sunday, October 28, 2012 9:31 PM CDT
Highland Park and Poteet have waged their share of battles at the district cross country meet over the years.

After a two-year break due to UIL realignment, the Scots and Pirates were back on center stage for the 10-4A boys competition.

Poteet, which has multiple state meet appearances and three state championships, has had the better of the head-to-head meetings, but it was Highland Park's turn on Saturday as it claimed the 10-4A championship at Samuell Farm.

Both of those teams and third-place Carrollton Newman Smith, as well as the top 10 individuals, will advance to the Class 4A Region II meet on Saturday at Vandergriff Park at The University of Arlington.

The Scots also took the girls district championship, outracing Forney and North Forney for the title.

While the boys team crown was expected to be a showdown between the two favorites, it was Carrollton Newman Smith's Daniel Debes who won the individual title in a time of 16:27.09

Highland Park began to pick up steam shortly thereafter, claiming the second, third and fifth-place spots.

Poteet's Josafat Monreal, Steven Martinez and Cody Dziak swept the seventh-ninth spot, Sulaiman Noor was 11th and Ignacio Ramirez placed 14th, but the Scots were able to match those efforts, finishing with a total of 33 to the Pirates' 52.

West Mesquite finished in a tie for fifth place with North Forney with a total of 132. The Wranglers got a pair of top-25 finishes from Ignacio Ramirez and Gustavo Rios.

While the MISD teams were unable to advance in the girls meet, they will be represented by Poteet's Evie Reavis, who took 10th among all individuals.

Highland Park's Natalie Rathjen won the individual title by more than a minute over Caylon McMillan of Forney.

The Scots took five of the top nine spots overall to win the championship with a total of 27. Forney was right on their heels, with five of the top 16 to finish with 41.

The Pirates (94) were edged by one point by North Forney for third place. After Reavis, Poteet made a charge and its top five that also included Sierrah Martinez, Emily Riley, Savanah Doty and Kristina Watson finished ahead of North Forney's quintet. But led by a pair of top-15 finishes, the Falcons had just enough of a cushion built up to hold them off.

The West Mesquite girls, led by top-25 finishes from Julia Dean and Aileen Nunez, took fifth place overall.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The Highland Park boys and girls team each claimed the district championship with perfect scores of 15 on Saturday at Samuell Farm.

Poteet's boys team claimed second place, followed by West Mesquite in third. The Pirates had three runners place in the top 20 in Trevor Spear, Frankie Santos and Javier Quintero. The Wranglers had a pair in the top 25 with Carlos Devora and Jesse Hernandez.

On the girls side, Poteet was third and West Mesquite took fifth. The Pirates got strong performances from Ashlynn Johnson, Rachel Truong and Andrea Carrasco, while the Wranglers were led by Cassandra Ballard.
