Step out for National Night Out Oct. 2

Drug and crime prevention starts right at home, and one way to encourage that is through National Night Out, a day filled with Neighborhood Watch block parties promoting such prevention.
The Town of Little Elm will host its NNO on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at various subdivisions within the town. The Little Elm Police Department is asking Neighborhood Watch groups to register their block parties as soon as possible if they have not done so.
"The sooner the better at this point," said Sgt. Steve Garst, sergeant of LEPD community services.
"[NNO] is pretty significant," Garst said. "We always get in influx of people that sign up. We have formed completely new groups [from NNO]. [Neighborhood Watch] helps people be aware of what's going on in their neighborhood and help us be aware of what their concerns are."
Garst said that many groups that have signed up will be hosting cook-outs, bounce houses, games for children and more. One is hosting various cuisine samples inspired from around the world.
"People are trying different things to get an interest and get people to come out," Garst said.
Little Elm police officers will begin visiting block parties around town between 6 and 9 p.m. As of yet, the following neighborhoods have signed up to participate in NNO on Oct. 2: Eldorado Estates II and III, Sunrise Bay, Robinson Ridge, Stardust Ranch, Shell Beach, Sunset Pointe (Reserve) and Villages of Woodlake. A couple of neighborhoods have chosen to host their event on Oct. 7, the official NNO date.
On average, Little Elm has about 12 active Neighborhood Watch groups.
Neighborhood Watch groups that wish to host a block party must completed a form found online at www.littleelm.org/printableforms. The form entitled "Neighborhood Block Party" must be completed and turned into the LEPD at the Public Safety Center, 88 West Eldorado Parkway. Or, forms can be mailed to LEPD, Crime Prevention Division, 100 West Eldorado Parkway, Little Elm, TX 75068.
If groups will need to close down a portion of the street for the block party, the form, "Neighborhood Block Party Signatures," must be completed as well with the signatures of homes directly affected by the closure. Barricades are limited and are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The form requests a deposit of $50 for blockades, but that fee is waived for this event. There is no deadline for a block party, but the register forms must be turned in a week before to get on the schedule.
Neighborhood Watch groups will have tables set up with information and sign-up sheets for new members interested.
