In memoriam: Veterans Memorial Bridge dedication held Sunday

Published: Friday, November 16, 2012 3:53 PM CST
Exactly one year after its ground breaking, the Veterans Memorial Bridge was dedicated Sunday in a ceremony commemorating those who have served in the armed forces. The Veterans Day ceremony was attended by more than 200 people and included a flag ceremony, 21-gun salute and speeches from a number of local dignitaries.

Little Elm Town Council member Bill Roebken Jr. was among those who spoke at the event, which he afterward said was excellent and well put together by the people involved. The town of Little Elm and American Legion Post 182, which includes Roebken as a member, worked in conjunction on the ceremony.

“To have something like this in Little Elm is really great,” he said. “The Veterans Memorial Bridge will truly be a symbol of patriotism and remembrance for those who are currently serving and those who have sacrificed to make our nation great. I hope people think about that every time they cross the bridge.”

Roebken also praised Little Elm's banner program, another recent initiative aimed at honoring veterans. The program will place banners with the names of currently serving members of the military from Little Elm on light polls along the bridge and in other areas of town at no cost to the family. The banners will be given to the honoree when they return home from service.

The Veterans Memorial Bridge crosses Cottonwood Creek and provides a solution for frequent road closures caused by flooding at the low-elevation waterway. The 500-foot, four-lane bridge includes 32-foot stone columns extending above the bridge deck, sidewalks, four pedestrian overlooks, connection to a 4,500-foot trail system and extensive landscaping and irrigation, according to a release from the town.

“The new bridge is a showcase for Little Elm, and its dedication to the area’s veterans is a way that we show our appreciation for the sacrifices they and their families have made and continue to make in defense of our country,” added Matt Mueller, Little Elm Town Manager.
