Degan students use GPS to take on astronomy

Published: Tuesday, October 23, 2012 5:10 PM CDT
Some adults struggle to operate complicated GPS (global positioning system) devices to find their way from one location to another, but fifth-graders in Michael Staten's class at Degan Elementary can use them to navigate concepts even more complicated than directions.

This fall, Staten's students used hand-held GPS technology in an outdoor setting to better understand astronomy concepts during science lessons. The technology allowed students to understand the relationship between the earth, moon and sun by giving them an experience in which they could make the connections firsthand.

"The students were very successful in learning the astronomy concepts," Staten said. "This activity allowed them to demonstrate how the earth rotates on its axis the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky."
