Homecoming success: McKinney Christian throttles Coram Deo

Published: Saturday, November 10, 2012 1:44 AM CST
McKinney Christian Academy dominated Coram Deo 45-0 to keep their football playoff hopes alive Friday night in a Homecoming win at McKinney North High School.

The Mustangs used a 38-0 halftime lead to put the Lions away early. The Mustangs were led by junior running back Connor Doyle who had 230 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Freshman Reese Shaw filled in capably for senior quarterback Dallas Brock, who was sidelined with pneumonia. Shaw threw for 104 yards and no interceptions.

The Mustang defense smothered the Lion's rushing game, holding them to minus 31 yards. Much of the negative yardage was due to a ferocious MCA pass rush by linemen Ben Bajema, Zach Harrell, Nick Weidemann, and Kevin Jacobs. The four repeatedly sacked Coram Deo quarterback Luke Black, keeping him on the run most of the night.

MCA scoring started on the third play from scrimmage when Sky Walker stepped in from the two-yard line on the play immediately following a 74-yard sprint by Doyle, who was tackled at the two. Caleb Wysong made the extra point. The Mustangs struck again on their next possession on another run by Doyle. This time Doyle scored from 28 yards out. The PAT made it 14-0 Mustangs.

Second quarter scoring began with Doyle's 20-yard run through the Lion defenders following a 29-yard leaping catch by freshman Jamie Greenwell from Shaw. On their next possession, the Mustangs scored on the second play when Doyle galloped 40 yards on his way to the end zone.

Following McKinney Christian's kickoff, Greenwell intercepted the Lion's Black and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. Wysong's kick made it 35-0. Wysong then had a 33-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining in the half to establish MCA's 38-0 lead.

Both teams stalled in the third quarter. Neither of which could manage to score. McKinney Christian's final drive was a 44-yard effort following a failed fake punt by Coram Deo. MCA had the ball on Coram Deo's 35-yard line with fourth and one, but two consecutive penalties by the Mustangs made it fourth and eleven at the 45.

Shaw scrambled to his right to avoid the rush and threw 29 yards downfield. MCA's Will Jacobs made a back shoulder, one-handed grab on the sideline, while managing to keep his feet in bounds to keep the drive alive. Doyle then scored on a 16-yard run on the next play. Wysong's final extra point made it 45-0 for the final score.

The Mustang's win, combined with losses by the Woodlands Christian Academy, and Bryan St. Joseph Catholic School put the three teams into a three-way tie for the final wild card spot in the TAPPS Division III playoffs. That spot was to be determined late Friday night by TAPPS officials.
