The next Texas senator in District 8 will likely be McKinney Republican Ken Paxton.
The current District 70 representative, Paxton received 65.7 percent of the votes during the two-week early voting period. Democratic challenger Jack Ternan received 31.7 percent of the vote, while Libertarian Ed Kless received 2.6 percent.
With 49 percent of the county's registered voters casting a ballot during early voting, it will be nearly impossible for Ternan to make up the difference and win the election.
The three men are seeking the seat currently held by Republican Florence Shapiro, who declined to seek re-election. Shapiro was first elected to the state senate in 1993.
