North Mesquite boys, girls earn runner-up finishes at 12-5A cross country meet

Published: Sunday, October 28, 2012 9:31 PM CDT
In one of the most competitive district meets in recent history, it seemed as if every team had its share of highlights.

When it was all settled, North Mesquite was the lone school that will have both of its teams advancing through the regional meet.

The Stallion boys finished second to Rockwall, while the girls were the runner-up to Tyler Lee at the District 12-5A meet on Saturday at Samuell Farm.

All four of those teams, as well as the Mesquite boys and the Rockwall-Heath girls, will advance to the Class 5A Region II meet on Saturday at Vandergriff Park at The University of Texas at Arlington.

The North Mesquite boys were led by individual champion Justin Ballard, who won the event in a time of 16:43.00, and Benjamin Haynes, who finished fourth. Rockwall countered with the second and third-place finishers, while Mesquite and Longview also placed two runners in the top 10.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead when their final three runners took 10th, 12th and 16th for a total of 43. North Mesquite stayed close behind Diego Munoz, Gustavo Rosas and Zavier McFadden, but its score of 65 fell short.

The Skeeters stayed close to the leaders early on as Alfonso Hernandez was seventh, Aeronn Beaver took eighth and Ronnie Bannister finished 11th. Daniel Arroyo and Mario Morales rounded out the top five for a score of 76.

Horn took seventh place in the team standings, led by top-25 finishes from Jalen McAdams and Alex Suaminen.

The girls side saw similar parity at the top as six different teams were represented in the top nine finishers.

Tyler Lee grabbed the early lead with three in the top 10 and its total of 46 was too much to overcome.

North Mesquite was led by Lilly Davila, who was fifth, but they were able to finish second overall thanks to their depth. Karen Calderon, Arian Spears, Patricia Dossett and Xochiti Bedoy all laced in the top 20 to help the Stallions finish with a total of 65.

Mesquite's Madison Ramirez is headed to the regional meet after finishing fourth, as she and Martina Cervantes, who was 11th, helped the team place fifth.

Horn did not field a full girls team, but did have Teresa Siguenza place 17th in the individual race.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The North Mesquite girls cruised to the 12-5A cross country championship on Saturday at Samuell Farm. The Stallions had all five runners place in the top 10 to finish with a total score of 25.

Claudia Yanez was the individual district champion and she was followed closely by Larissa Lopez (fourth), Brenda Briones (fifth), Debbie Miranda (seventh) and Tori Asiaban (10th).

The Rockwall boys placed first followed by Mesquite in second place. The Skeeters' Juaqin Tinoco won the individual title while teammate Luis Flores was ninth.

North Mesquite was fourth after top-15 finishes from Jesus Guzman and Martin Martinez.
