High powered: Wakeland puts up 68 points in win over TCA

Published: Saturday, September 22, 2012 1:10 AM CDT
ADDISON -- Friday night's game between Wakeland and Trinity Christian Academy featured two quarterbacks that have combined for nearly 2,000 yards passing in a total of five games.

Both quarterbacks also had their teams undefeated heading into the contest from Tom Landry Stadium in Addison. However, something had to give with the two gunslingers matched against each other in TCA's Homecoming game.

It was Wakeland junior Jackson Lamb that got the best of TCA senior Daniel Davidson, earning a 68-23 rout of the Trojans.

"Our kids rose to the challenge tonight," said Marty Secord, Wakeland head coach.

The game was determined in the opening quarter when Wakeland used a dominating start to build a 35-0 lead after 12 minutes.

Lamb got the Wolverines on the board just two plays into the contest after completing a short throw to junior running back Tyler Carver, who ran 49 yards for a touchdown.

"Any time you can score quick like that, it sets the tone offensively," Secord said. "It really helps the team get off to a good start."

Davidson couldn't answer back and the Trojans were forced to punt after gaining only one first down. To make matters worse, TCA had its punt blocked and Wakeland was given a shortened field for the first of many times on the night.

Once again it took only two plays for Wakeland to find the end zone, this time with junior running back Alex Marr punching it in from five yards out for a 14-0 lead.

Wakeland didn't let up there and intercepted a Davidson pass on TCA's following possession before capitalizing on the next play. Lamb hooked up with senior receiver Turner Smiley for a 35-yard touchdown that gave the Wolverines a 21-0 lead with 8:21 left in the first quarter.

Things then began to snowball for TCA after each team traded punts on the following two possessions. The Wakeland defense proceeded to intercept another Davidson pass later in the first and Lamb hit senior receiver Dan Harrington three plays later for a 50-yard touchdown that made it 28-0 with two minutes left in the quarter.

"Games like this you really have to focus and I think we did that tonight," Secord said.

TCA would turn the ball over for the third time in the quarter on its next drive after Davidson completed a pass to junior receiver Brock Thomas, who fumbled the ball after making the catch.

Wakeland recovered at the TCA 41-yard line and Carver walked in for a 3-yard touchdown to put the Wolverines ahead, 35-0, at the end of one quarter.

"I was pleased with the offense and the defense tonight," Secord said. "[TCA] runs a tough scheme and we did a good job of handling it."

The Trojans would finally get on the board at the 7:44 mark of the second quarter when Davidson kept it for a 2-yard score, trimming the deficit to 35-7.

The Wolverines answered right back with a 36-yard touchdown run from Marr after a pair of Lamb completions.

Marr finished the night with a game-high 94 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Carver added 63 yards and three touchdowns with just four carries in the game while also catching three passes for another 63 yards and one touchdown.

TCA then settled down at the offensive end and put together a second consecutive scoring drive. Davidson hooked up with Thomas for a 14-yard touchdown at the 3:11 mark of the second to make it 42-14.

The Trojans would add a 37-yard field goal from junior kicker Alexander Beiersdorf with just six seconds left in the frame to take a 42-17 deficit into the locker room.

"We coached all week to keep on playing," Secord said. "[Davidson] is a good quarterback. He's thrown for more than 1,000 yards for a reason. He understands their offense."

The TCA gunslinger had a rough night for his standards, completing 33-of-55 passes for 337 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, while also adding a score on the ground.

His counterpart, Lamb, completed 18 of his 27 pass attempts for 260 yards and three touchdowns while avoiding any interceptions for the third time in as many games.

Any thoughts the Trojans might have had about a comeback ended in the third when Carver scored on runs of five and 44 yards to give Wakeland a 54-17 lead heading into the fourth.

The Wolverines extended that lead early in the final frame, despite Lamb playing only three quarters.

Junior quarterback Mike Meric took over for Lamb and punched in a 4-yard run at the 8:35 mark of the quarter to make it a 61-17 Wakeland lead.

Davidson then added his final touchdown of the night on a 19-yard strike to senior receiver Nick Plumlee before Smiley took the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a score.

The Smiley return ended the game's scoring and allowed the Wolverines to come away with a 68-23 victory.

"We challenged them all week to step up against a good team and they did that," Secord said.

Wakeland improved to 3-0 with the win and will now face Frisco in each team's district opener.

"District is where it really counts," Secord said. "It's go time."

The 9-4A action will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday from FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco.
