Woman convicted of bribing judge sentenced to 30 days in jail

A University Park woman has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for her role in the bribery case that led to the resignation of former Collin County District Court Judge Suzanne Wooten.
Stacy Stine Cary, 54, was convicted in June of eight felonies, including six counts of bribery, one count of money laundering and one count of engaging in organized criminal activity. In addition to her jail time, Cary must also serve 10 years probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
Prosecutors accused Cary and her husband, David, of funneling six payments totaling $150,000 into Wooten's campaign account. The state alleges the payments were made in an attempt to gain favor with Wooten in a pending child custody case.
Wooten was elected judge in the 380th District Court in 2008, but was forced to resign in November after being convicted of nine felonies stemming from the bribery case. She was sentenced to 10 years probation as well as more than 1,000 hours of community service and a $10,000 fine.
Two more individuals are still awaiting trial in the case. James Stephen Spencer, Wooten's campaign manager, will go to trial on Dec. 3, and David Cary will go to trial April 15.
