College Street gets creative

Published: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 2:31 PM CDT
Creative scheduling at College Street Elementary (College Street) is providing third- through fifth-grade students extra learning enrichment activities and teachers extra professional learning time, which also benefits students.

Every other week, specials teachers of music, physical education, art and library take students for an additional 45 minutes. During this time, they work with students to use multiple intelligences to solidify classroom objectives through music, art, movement and dramatics. In order to decide the focus of these learning enrichment activities, every other week all teachers work together to discuss objectives students need additional work on and brainstorm innovative ideas to go deeper into the objective.

For example, during the week of Sept. 17-21, also known as "Celebrate Freedom Week," specials teachers focused on the constitution. Music teacher Marissa Rick helped students put the words to the preamble to a catchy tune, art teacher Janean Loyd led the students in using feather pens to experience how the founding fathers signed the constitution, physical education teacher Casey Melton taught students a game with the underlining moral of fairness and librarian Beverly McCalmont helped students complete internet research to learn more about the constitution.

"We are trying to capitalize on both teacher and student strengths to help all students and staff find a way to be both successful and engaged in their own learning," said College Street Principal Cynthia Jaird. "So far, this extra effort has been extremely successful. I look forward to seeing what else our outstanding staff and students come up with this school year."

The extra professional learning time classroom teachers receive as a result allows them to focus on the creation of more meaningful, relevant and engaging learning opportunities for students. These activities are evidence that College Street is working to ensure all students enjoy thriving, productive lives in a future they create.
