SACHSE SHOCKER: Patriots rally for 28 unanswered points in final 13 minutes to stun Mustangs

There was a sense of unease in the air at Homer B. Johnson Stadium on Thursday night.
Although Sachse led comfortably for much of the night, something seemed a little off for a team that had been so dominant during its 5-0 start.
And then with a scoring barrage reminiscent of what the Mustangs have been doing to other teams, Lakeview turned the tables and made that feeling of uneasiness a reality.
Instead of celebrating a victory that seemed secure for much of the night, the Mustangs fell to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in 11-5A as it watched as upstart Lakeview (4-2, 1-1) swarm the field after a defining win.
Sachse had built a double-digit lead in the first eight minutes, and although it maintained a comfortable cushion for much of the night, it never felt completely safe.
The Mustangs committed 10 penalties for 95 yards. They uncharacteristically dropped passes and blown assignments in the secondary resulted in big Lakeview plays that allowed them to hang around.
Still, it was hard to argue that Sachse was not in control of the game late, despite a 31-yard touchdown pass from Brent Davenport to Neiman Reed that closed the gap to 41-28 with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Mustangs, who never punted in the game, had only stopped themselves at that point, but the Patriot defense was about to make an impact.
On the opening play of the fourth quarter, Xavier Pinedo jarred the ball loose and Checotah Peachee recovered for Lakeview at the Sachse 28. Six plays later, Demarcus Hall converted on fourth-and-one with a 6-yard touchdown run and it was suddenly a one-score game at 41-35.
Whether it was intentional or not, the Patriots banged the ensuing kickoff directly off of one of the Mustangs' blockers and it bounced directly back to Alex Walker at midfield.
Lakeview drove down the field and again came through on fourth down when Davenport snuck in from the one-inch line to give them a 42-41 lead with 6:21 left in the game.
Sachse was in the unusual position of trailing, but it had been here before. In the season opener, the Mustangs needed to drive for a late touchdown against Wylie to tie the game, which they did in a game they went on to win in overtime.
Sachse moved the ball behind Kent Myers, who accounted for more than 350 yards combined on the ground and through the air. The Mustangs got down to the Lakeview 28, but two dropped passes and a false start penalty put them in a tough situation and Myers' scramble on fourth down came up a yard short.
On the next play, Hall, who had 17 carries for 144 yards, ripped off a 63-yard run. After calling a timeout, Sachse elected to concede the points, with Hall scoring on a 22-yard run that made it 49-41 with 1:11 left.
Playing against an extreme prevent defense, the Mustangs got down to the Lakeview 31, but in the final sign that it was not their night, Myers threw his first interception of the season when Marquis Denmark nabbed a deep pass at the 15-yard line with 10 seconds left.
The sour ending spoiled an otherwise good night for Myers, who completed 23-of-34 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 18 carries for 136 yards and two scores on the ground.
It was Myers who had opened the scoring early in the first quarter, following up an interception by Marquis Williams with a 3-yard touchdown run for a quick 7-0 lead.
After a short Lakeview punt, John Pannell extended the advantage to 10-0 with a 35-yard field goal, and it swelled to 17-0 early in the second quarter when Myers threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Bruce Brookins.
The Patriot offense had been stagnant to that point, but started to get some things working in the running game.
Lakeview moved 60 yards in eight plays, with Davenport scoring on a 10-yard run to make it 17-7.
Pannell added his second field goal of the half, this one from 22 yards, but the Patriots marched right back down the field and closed to within 20-14 on a 5-yard scoring run from Dominique Lewis.
The mark of a good team is how they finish one half and start the next and that looked like it would be the difference in the game when Myers threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tyrique Edwards with just 22 seconds left before halftime and Devine Ozigbo had a 5-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the third quarter to make it 34-14.
The Mustangs were content to trade scores at that point, with Reid's 40-yard touchdown reception from Davenport getting matched by a 2-yard run by Myers that made it 41-21 with 2:20 left to play.
But that back-and-forth exchange became a one-sided affair from that point, as Lakeview refused to be denied down the stretch.
