Faculty, staff and students at Plano's Faith Lutheran School gathered on Monday, September 17 with local dignitaries, members of the military and other guests for a public reading of the U.S. Constitution.

The event featured appearances from U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson, former Garland City Councilman Darren Lathen, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force veteran and Prosper Police Officer Paul Norris and U.S. Marine veteran Russell Holmes as well as the presentation of a proclamation on behalf of Plano Mayor Phil Dyer. The event was one of hundreds of U.S. Constitution readings that will be conducted in cities and towns all across the United States to celebrate Constitution Day.

"This event was a way for us to express our respect for our country and for the U.S. Constitution and to remind ourselves, our students and our community that this document is still very relevant today," said Faith Lutheran School Principal Christian Boehlke of Wylie. "Too many are not really, truly familiar with the U.S. Constitution, what it says and what it stands for. Reading it aloud was educational and a good reminder for all of us."

The event featured the Faith Lutheran School choir singing the National Anthem and the school band's performance of "God Bless America." Faith Lutheran School Student Council President Noah Johnson introduced those reading sections the U.S. Constitution, including Congressman Johnson.

"I have been reading about our Constitution," said Congressman Johnson. "And it wasn't an easy task for those guys that wrote it. They argued among themselves, believe it or not, and came up with what I think is a fine document for us to follow....Thank you for letting me be with you to be with you today to read this great document. It has certainly withstood the test of time."
