On the Right Track: Carroll returns to win column with 63-3 thrashing of Midland

SOUTHLAKE -- It came a week later than was desired, but the first football win of 2012 went in the books for Southlake Carroll (1-1) Friday as it blew out the Midland Bulldogs, 63-3.

The game started off perfectly for Carroll, which drove 75-yards in 36 seconds on its opening drive, scoring its first points of the season and setting the tone of the game on a 6-yard run by senior quarterback Kenny Hill.

"The fast start was the key tonight," Hill said. "It just carried us through the entire game. Everybody was so embarrassed about last week that we knew we had to score."

Should have been a cowboy: Coppell owns second half against Boyd in 31-6 win

COPPELL—After laying dormant though much of the first half of Friday's showdown with McKinney Boyd, Coppell exploded in the second and scored on three consecutive drives resulting from turnovers.

The result transformed what had been a tightly-contested game into a 31-6 Coppell blowout win at Buddy Echols Stadium.

In another pristine defensive performance, Coppell (2-0) held the Broncos under 200 yards of offense after opening the season with a 41-8 win against Longview in which they allowed just a shade more than that mark.

“We're still getting used to what we do, and [Boyd] is well-coached and a good football team,” said Joe McBride, Coppell head coach. “I knew this would be a battle, so we just stayed workmanlike and kept tempo and tempo and tempo-ing it and things started going our way.”

Boyd (0-2) scored its lone touchdown of the night in the third quarter on a 50-yard run by senior running back Bryan Driskell, who cut through the bulk of the Coppell defense on his way to the sideline before outracing the rest.

The Cowboys blocked the extra point attempt to preserve a 7-6 lead and answered immediately with a methodical 12-play, 88-yard drive capped by a 22-yard touchdown rush from junior running back Gavin McDaniel.

Coppell would have an easier time scoring from that point on courtesy of a three-set of turnovers that kept its offense with quality field position, starting with a recovered fumble forced on the ensuing kickoff return. The Cowboys turned that setup into an expanded lead on a 27-yard field goal from junior kicker Adam Centers.

“We turned the ball over and gave them some really good field position and obviously that didn't help,” said Don Drake, Boyd head coach. “Not being able to move the ball effectively tonight hurt us quite a bit.”

Next in line was an interception by senior Jacob Logan – who scored the game's opening touchdown on a 30-yard reception in the first quarter to highlight his two-way contributions. Coppell took advantage of that turnover as well on a 36-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter from senior quarterback Colby Mahon to senior wideout Cameron Smith.

Coppell also picked off Boyd's next pass attempt to put the ball in the hands of sophomore running back Charles West for a 32-yard touchdown rush. That score made it 24 unanswered points for the Cowboys since Driskell's touchdown and put them ahead by their winning margin.

Coppell churned out 411 yards of offense on the night with a nice balance between passing and a multi-tiered run game led by McDaniel, who had 100 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, and West, who rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Mahon threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-17 passing (70 percent).

Boyd had opportunities to put up points early on but a missed field goal and dropped pass in the end zone cost it. Driskell rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries, while junior quarterback Curtis Ladd threw for 84 yards and an interception on 6-of-15 passing (40 percent). His favorite target was his brother, senior receiver Patrick Ladd, who caught three passes for 60 yards.

Boyd's defense impressed early on by holding Coppell in check through most of the first half. The Cowboys were confident from the start and tried to convert a fourth-and-1 on their own 34-yard line on the game's opening possession, but the Broncos shut them down to set an early tone.

After a scoreless first quarter, Coppell nearly broke the deadlock in the second but fumbled what would have been a touchdown run. It was another huge play from the Broncos, but without a response from their offense, they could only hold up so long before the Cowboys broke them down.

“Defensively, I thought we played really well in the first half,” Drake said, “and I thought we kept battling the whole game, we just didn't help ourselves a whole lot by not keeping the ball on the field and moving it.”

Coppell will look to continue its perfect start Friday, Sept. 14 when it visits Rockwall.

Boyd will be after its first win the same day when it travels to Garland to take on its former district rival. The Broncos opened the season last week with a 38-20 loss to Mesquite Horn, which beat Garland on Thursday, 42-0.

“It's disappointing, no doubt,” Drake said, “but you go back to work and keep working. That's what I told the kids. When things don't go your way, try harder and keep working harder. That's what you do. That's two good football teams we've lost to and obviously we've got a new one to start getting ready for next week. We'll go back to work on Monday.”
