Allen, Lovejoy school districts excited to begin
By J. David Barron, dbarron@starlocalnews.com
The feeling is even more than palpable this year. It's resounding.
The 2012-2013 academic school year begins Monday for students in the Allen and Lovejoy districts, and expectations are as high as they have ever been in both communities.
Allen High School will kick off the inaugural season of the new Eagle Stadium with a special pep rally Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The stadium, one of the most impressive high school venues of its kind in the nation, will open its gates at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and will include performances by the Allen Eagle Band, Color Guard, Tallenettes and cheerleaders, in addition to comments from key district officials. There will also be introductions of the football, volleyball and cross-country teams. Eagle Stadium cost nearly $60 million and touts a capacity of 18,000. School officials expect that capacity to be reached when the six-time defending district champion Eagles open play in the new stadium against reigning Class 5A state champion and perennial powerhouse Southlake Carroll on Friday, Aug. 31.
"I think we've got a great year ahead of us for several reasons," Carroll noted. "The community supported our TRE (Tax Ratification Election) last fall and, as a result, we were able to open the schools this year with more teachers and smaller class sizes.
"The opening of the football stadium on Aug. 31 is exciting for the entire community," Carroll continued. "And students will be returning to a newly renovated campus at Norton Elementary School. One other project we're excited about is the expansion of Ereckson Middle School."
Athletic success is high on the list of expectations for this year in Lovejoy, as well. The Leopards are moving up in class this year to 4A, and despite several publications predicting a tough learning curve across the Lovejoy playing fields, the Lady Leopards spiked traditional Class 5A athletic powerhouse Plano West in volleyball last Thursday. In addition, long lines are forming for football season tickets, reports Lovejoy ISD Superintendant Ted Moore.
"When I left the office Friday night, there were already some folks in line for tickets and at least one large motor home to make the wait more enjoyable," Moore said.
