Wranglers trounce Rockwall to claim season opener

It took West Mesquite more than a month to earn its first victory a year ago.
The Wranglers wanted no part of a similar wait this season and they proved it on Friday night.
West Mesquite jumped on Rockwall early and often as it rolled to a 43-17 victory at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.
The Wranglers were on the road and playing against a Class 5A program, but they left no doubt who was the better team.
Quarterback Chason Virgil, back in the starting lineup after missing the final half of last season with an injury, completed 20-of-28 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns.
He also showed the ability to make plays with his feet, as he did to start the scoring when his 33-yard touchdown run gave West Mesquite a 7-0 lead.
The offense went right back to work later in the first quarter, as Virgil threw a 31-yard scoring strike to William Stanley to make it 14-0.
Rockwall got on the scoreboard on a field goal by Tyler Bonny early in the second quarter, but the Wranglers wasted little time in regaining control.
Virgil threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Christian Mitchell and then went back to Stanley for a 54-yard score that pushed the advantage to 28-3 at halftime.
Rockwall showed signs of life early in the second half when Dylan Campman threw a touchdown pass to Zach Berryman but West Mesquite immediately countered, as Raashaan Reason returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a score to make it 35-10.
Campman added a 9-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter for the Yellowjackets, but the Wranglers again matched the score behind Reason, who scampered into the end zone from 24 yards out to provide the final margin.
