Horn volleyball team unable to keep up with Red Oak
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
In its final tune-up for the start of District 12-5A play, Horn was unable to keep up with perennial powerhouse Red Oak, as the Hawks cruised to a 25-12, 25-5, 25-20 victory on Tuesday.
The Jaguars close out the non-district portion of the schedule with a 13-16 record heading into the district opener on Friday at North Mesquite.
Horn got a couple of early kills from Andi Spearman and another by Abby Kilgore, but Red Oak still raced to a 10-4 lead in the opening game.
The second game was all Hawks, as they scored seven of the first eight points and were never challenged in a 25-5 victory.
The third game was the most tightly-contested. Horn jumped out quickly to an 8-3 lead and were still ahead after points from Spearman and Alex Fletcher, but Red Oak caught them to tie the score at 11-11 and surged ahead 16-13.
The Jaguars refused to go away, as kills from Spearman and Kilgore helped them tie it at 18-18, but Red Oak was too much down the stretch as they closed out the sweep.
In addition to playing North Mesquite on Friday, Horn will also play at Rockwall on Tuesday.
The Stallions will be going into that 12-5A clash on a high note after outlasting McKinney North in a five-game win.
North Mesquite (7-13) got off to a strong start, faded in the fourth game and then saved its best for last in a 26-24, 25-23, 24-26, 25-12, 15-7 victory.
After the match with Horn, the Stallions will travel to face Tyler Lee on Tuesday.
In another local matchup, Mesquite rallied from a one-game deficit to defeat Sunnyvale on Tuesday.
The Skeeters (6-14) were edged in the opening game but came back strong from that point to pull out a 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-23 victory.
Mesquite will have a bye on the opening day of 12-5A play on Friday and will host Rockwall-Heath in its district opener on Tuesday.
The final non-district matches did not go according to plan for Rowlett, Sachse or Poteet.
The Eagles (7-11) were swept by Frisco Centennial in a 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 loss. Rowlett will open 11-5A with a pair of road games against Naaman Forest on Friday and Garland on Tuesday.
The Mustangs (5-13) were unable to hold onto a two-game lead as Lake Highlands rallied for a 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-11 victory. Sachse has a 11-5A bye on Friday and will play at Hebron before starting the district season on Tuesday against Lakevie.
Poteet slipped to 5-16 on the season with a 25-22, 28-26, 25-20 loss to Lake Dallas on Tuesday. The Pirates will play at North Forney on Friday and host Forney on Tuesday.
West Mesquite was off on Tuesday and will return to action for its 10-4A opener on Friday at home against Forney before playing at Terrell on Tuesday.
