After going winless last season, McKinney made the most of a fresh start Friday with a 55-46 victory against Mansfield Legacy. In the process, the Lions broke an 11-game losing streak that dates back to Nov. 5, 2010.

The high-flying McKinney offense racked up 626 yards against Mansfield. Senior quarterback Robert Somborn threw for 241 yards and four touchdowns on 16-of-26 passing (61 percent), while senior Red Shannon and junior Tommy Candela provided the bulk of McKinney's 385 rushing yards.

Candela rushed for 202 yards on 23 carries, including 15-yard and 25-yard touchdowns. Shannon rushed for 138 yards and a 36-yard touchdown on 12 carries and also caught three passes for an additional 36 yards.

McKinney built a sizable lead in a 21-point second quarter that included a 15-yard touchdown reception by senior wideout Connor Fuentes and a 27-yard pass from junior wideout TV Williams, who also caught a 52-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

The Lions carried a 28-13 advantage into the break, but Mansfield came out firing in the second half to keep things interesting. The Broncos offense put up 508 yards thanks in large part to quarterback Brady Burke, who threw for 374 yards and five touchdowns on 20-of-41 passing (48 percent).

Between the two teams, Friday's game featured 1,134 yards of offense. Big plays were the name of the game, as the average rush for McKinney went for just under 10 yards and the average pass traveled just over nine.

Mansfield cut into McKinney's lead with a 25-point showing in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Broncos, they couldn't prevent the Lions from answering with 20 points of their own. Shannon and Candela both chipped in a touchdown and Fuentes scored the second of his two touchdowns on a 9-yard reception.

Fuentes and Williams each had a pair of receiving touchdowns. In fact, the two times Williams caught a pass he scored, racking up 79 yards in the process. Fuentes was McKinney's most productive receiver with eight catches for 89 yards.

The Lions placed a series of teams with losing records last season at the front of their pre-district schedule, and Friday's win netted them exactly the results they wanted. For the first time in over a year, they were the only McKinney team to win their game. They'll look to make it two in a row next week when they host Frisco Heritage at Ron Poe Stadium on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
