Coppell resident crowned Miss Texas
By Lexie Morrison
Miss Texas pageant brings Coppell to the forefront. On July 7, Coppell native DaNae Couch won the prestigious title of Miss Texas 2012 at the Allen Event Center in Allen.
The Miss Texas 2012 pageant contestants participated in an interview with the judges, an evening gown competition, a swimsuit competition, and a talent performance.
Couch, who previously held the title of Miss Dallas, performed her talent of baton twirling to the Glee cast version of "You Can't Stop the Beat" to a crowd of more than 2,000 people at the Allen Event Center.
"It was surreal," she said. "You dream for so long that your goal will become a reality and to actually have it happen was absolutely incredible."
Couch, 23, is currently a law student at Texas Tech and received her undergraduate degree from Baylor University in May 2010.
Four years ago, Couch started competing in pageants while working to receive her undergraduate degree from Baylor. She wanted to continue her education and pursue law school, but she knew it would be difficult.
"I was looking for scholarship money to continue to pay for my education," Couch said. "I wanted to go on to law school and I knew that doing that was going to come with a price tag."
The Miss America Organization is the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women. The organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in scholarship assistance to those who become Miss America and to more than 12,000 young women who compete in state and local competitions as well, according to the Miss America Organization's website.
Since she began competing in pageants, Couch has received approximately $30,000 in scholarship money through the Miss Texas Organization that she can put to use at Texas Tech.
"It has really been a blessing to be able to continue to pay for my education through this system," she said.
Throughout the year, Couch will travel the state and support her personal platform, "Hope for Family Recovery: Life Beyond Addiction" to help families and friends of those struggling with addictions.
"Someone I know personally struggled with an addiction problem," Couch said. "I want to teach people the signs to look for when someone is falling prey to addiction and also help them with the problems and emotions that they are struggling with."
As Miss Texas, Couch also hopes to help increase the scholarship amounts that the Miss Texas organization can give out to the contestants.
"It was so influential to me to decide to be a part of the Miss Texas program," Couch said. "I really want to make sure to give back so that it impact so many more girls who come through the program."
Couch gave advice for young girls who look up to her as a role model.
"My advice to young girls would be to believe in yourself above all other things," Couch said. "Believe that there is something inside of you that is greater than any obstacle."
In January, Couch will represent Texas as she competes for the crown at the Miss America Pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
