LAKE HIGHLANDS – In their first match of the season, McKinney Boyd volleyball bridged the gap between last year’s state finals run and a promising 2012 campaign with a sweep of Lake Highlands on Tuesday.
“I thought we came out very strong, specifically with our ball control,” said Kelly Quinn, Boyd head coach. “We were in sync so much more than we were even in our scrimmage. After a scrimmage and a practice, our ball control is so much better than it was, so I’m excited about that.”
The visiting Lady Broncos dominated their first match (25-6, 25-13, 25-13) courtesy of contributions from a strong group of returning players that includes senior outside hitter Megan Mollett, senior setter Brantlee Reid and senior libero Kaley Seaber.
Mollett led the offense with seven kills, no attacking errors and a .438 hitting percentage despite sitting out for an extended period late in the match. The Arkansas commit also contributed seven digs in a strong two-way performance. Reid tallied 19 assists as the primary facilitator and Seaber posted a team-high 13 digs. Seaber and defensive specialists Tori Turck, Haley Dickschat and Emily Elkins kept the Lady Wildcats’ offense from gaining any semblance of momentum during the match.
“[Seaber] is going to be such an impact player just as far as her leadership this year,” Quinn said.
Thanks in large part to performances from its veteran roster – which features eight returning seniors – Boyd avoided many of the errors that plagued Lake Highlands. The Lady Broncos didn’t give away points and had seven hitting errors on 72 attempts.
Boyd hit .250 with kills from a variety of sources: Kelly Koop (who also had five digs) and Krista Bukovec each scored four, Ashleigh Martin and Meagan Elkins chipped in three apiece, while Reid, Emma Meyer, Lauren Petrisin and Caitlyn Mills each added one.
Quinn would like to see her team’s hitting percentage and blocks rise in future matches as the Lady Broncos posted an equal amount of blocks and blocking errors.
Regardless of a few rough spots, the match was a promising start to what is expected to be another banner year for the Lady Broncos. They entered the season ranked as the No. 2 team in the state by Lonestarvolleyball.com and No. 5 team in their class by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Those high expectations were based on the returning talent from their 45-7 team last season that lost to Coppell in the Class 5A State Finals.
The Lady Broncos scrimmaged fellow area powers Lovejoy, Southlake Carroll and Frisco Liberty prior to opening the season with a sweep of Lake Highlands.
The Lady Broncos return to play Friday when they open the Duncanville Tournament of Champions against Memorial High School and Arlington Lamar. They’re first match is 11 a.m. at Sandra Meadows Arena.
