Manslaughter trial begins Aug. 13 in death of Allen woman

Published: Friday, August 3, 2012 3:20 PM CDT
The manslaughter trial of a Wylie man is expected to begin Aug. 13 and be presided over by 366th District Court Judge Ray Wheless in the Collin County Courthouse in McKinney.

Zachary R. Lewis, now 20, was 18 years old when witnesses said he slammed his silver Mustang into a vehicle at Exchange Parkway and Bray Central Drive in Allen in June 2010. Rachel Carr, 26, of Allen, was pronounced dead about two hours later at a local hospital. She died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Witnesses said the vehicle that struck Carr's was traveling 90 to 100 miles per hour. The impact was so hard that both the engine and battery were ejected from her vehicle.

According to the police report, Carr was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight. The victim was reportedly driving home from Banana Republic at Allen Premium Outlets, where she was the manager.

Following a lengthy investigation, Lewis was arrested at the University of Arkansas about two months following the accident. He was charged with manslaughter and posted $50,000 bond.

Carr's death was mourned by her family and many friends, who praised her as an upbeat person who was well liked by her employees. A candlelight vigil was held in her memory at the store the day following the accident.

Carr's mother, Jan Myers, later published a book that contained a collection of Carr's favorite quotes, many of which had been displayed in various places in her apartment. The book is titled, "Rachel's Little Quote Book: Messages She Left Us."

It contains Carr's favorite quotes from books, movies and songs, and some of her own quotes, including, "Cry me a river, build a bridge and get over it."

Myers said she got the idea for the book after she saw the impact the quotes had on Carr's co-workers as they visited her apartment shortly after the accident. The book also includes a section with contributions from Carr's co-workers, friends and family.
