Boys basketball: Sharp shooter Johnson inks with Southwestern
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
Recent Flower Mound graduate Taylor Johnson signed a letter of intent to continue his basketball career at the next level at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan.
On the court, Johnson led not only the Jaguars, but the entirety of District 8-5A in scoring during the 2011-12 season. Additionally, Johnson made 100 3-pointers on the season, shooting 47 percent from the perimeter, and scored a season-high 29 points against state-ranked Plano West to help lead a stirring comeback that earned head coach Henry Thomas his 500th career victory. Johnson was also named the 2012 Metro Classic All-Star MVP. He excelled in the classroom as well, earning the Century Club award for volunteering more than 100 hours of community service.
"I'm very excited about signing with Southwestern," Johnson said. "I went out there and really liked the campus and coaching staff. And they told me I was their No. 1 recruit, so I think I'll have a very good chance to go out there and contribute immediately. I know nothing is guaranteed, I just need to go up there and work hard.
At Southwestern, Johnson will be teammates with Lewisville product Cameron Clark.
"We talked a lot through the recruiting process," Johnson said. "We're good buddies and [Clark] helped me through it, and when he heard I was signing with Southwestern he gave me a call right away. We were pretty excited."
