Goodloe out, Pryor in at Plano
For the second straight year, Plano Senior is getting a new wrestling head coach.
Clay Goodloe was at the helm for one season, but is departing for the same position at Carrolton Creekview. Ironically enough, Creekview is involved with the Wildcats' new head coach as well as Jay Pryor, who started the Mustangs' program when the school opened, is taking over at Plano.
Forbes transfers to JPII
After two years at Plano West, junior hoopster Jackson Forbes will have a new home for the 2012-13 season.
Forbes' mother, June Spencer, confirmed that the small forward has transferred to John Paul II.
The 6-foot-6, 200-pounder made the Wolves' varsity team as a freshman, increasing his minutes throughout the year and picking up a starting spot for much of his sophomore season.
Forbes was second team all-district in 2011-12, the youngest player to make first or second team.
Now Forbes, currently competing at a showcase tournament in Orlando, will move to a Cardinals' squad that has plenty to build off. John Paul made it to the TAPPS 5A State Tournament for the first time in 2010-11 and advanced to the TAPPS 5A State Finals this past season.
Burkhead on watch list
Plano Senior alum, and Nebraska senior, Rex Burkhead is on the Doak Walker Award watch list.
The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate running back, with the preseason watch list boasting 52 names up for initial consideration.
Burkhead, a semifinalist for the award in 2011, is coming off a junior campaign with the Cornhuskers where he established career highs across the board. The former Wildcat ran for 1,357 yards and 15 touchdowns in addition to hauling in 21 receptions for 177 yards and two scores.
The winner will be announced Dec. 6.
Burkhead, who won the 2012 Rare Disease Champion Award, is also a nominee for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in part because of his work with 6 year old Jack Hoffman.
Mitchell heads to ESPNU
Prestonwood Christian Academy senior Mike Mitchell is one of 64 high school football standouts participating in Champion Gridiron Kings.
Held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., the event will air at 6 p.m. today on ESPNU. Mitchell is among the national prospects on hand, partaking in team competition, skills challenges and performance training.
The Lions' linebacker is fresh off a successful stint at The Opening, where he captured the SPARQ rating national championship by setting the all-time record.

Plano-East alumni football game
Football season may be on hiatus, but the Plano Senior-Plano East rivalry will continue at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 from Clark Stadium.
Set up by FootballLegendsofTexas.com, the Wildcats and Panthers will hold an alumni game.
Both schools are still looking for alumni that can participate as part of the cheerleaders, dance team, band or game itself. The player rosters are about half full with practices starting last week.
The organizer is attempting to recreate all facets of a high school game, down to the referees, announcers and custom made jerseys.

Swing Fore Yellow
Swing Fore Yellow, one of the pillars in the 4 Yellow Foundation's contributions to LIVESTRONG in the global fight against cancer, is coming to town.
A staple in Plano native Lance Armstrong's organization since 2009, the golf tournament will be held Sept. 23-24 at Gleneagles Country Club.
The festivities commence with a cocktail party Sept. 23 at III Forks Restaurant that will include live and silent auctions. The tournament will be held the following day and includes a round of golf as well as a continental breakfast and buffet luncheon.
The proceeds go to benefit the LIVESTRONG Foundation and Heroes for Children.
State VB moving to Garland
The UIL Volleyball State Championships are moving to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.
The tournament had been at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos since 2000.
"The Culwell Center is a first-class venue and we believe it will serve as a tremendous host," said Dr. Mark Cousins, UIL athletic director. "We look forward to working closely with Garland ISD in creating a great experience for the schools, fans and students involved."
The state tourney is set for Nov. 15-17.
"UIL championship events make memories that last a lifetime," said Dr. Curtis Culwell, Garland ISD Superintendent. "Garland ISD is privileged to host this premiere championship event."
Plano West is the lone Plano ISD team to ever advance to state, doing so in 2007.
JPII names new hoops coach
John Paul II has hired Mike Martin to take over as head coach of the girls basketball team.
Martin comes on board with the Lady Cardinals after a four-year stint coaching Vista Ridge in the TAPPS 4A ranks. During that time, Martin led the Rangers to two consecutive regional finals appearances on seasons of 32-6 and 34-3.
Currently with 794 career wins, Martin has two state championships, four regional finals nods and 18 district titles to his ledger, plus a 63-game winning streak that spanned three seasons.
Martin takes over for former head coach Katie Hensle, who left John Paul to take over as an assistant coach at Texas Tech.
Plano fencers at Olympics
While some higher profile Plano-trained athletes missed out on the 2012 Summer Olympics, the city will not be absent from London.
That's because siblings Zain Shaito, 21, and Mona Shaito, 18, will be competing for Lebanon in fencing. The pair, who are dual American-Lebanese citizens, is no stranger to high profile competition as they helped Ohio State win the 2012 NCAA Fencing Championship in the spring.
The Opening Ceremonies of the London Games are Friday.
Women's fencing begins Saturday with the men's competitions commencing Sunday.
