District supremacy: Bobcats dominate all-district baseball list

Published: Wednesday, June 27, 2012 12:09 PM CDT
It should come as no surprise that Celina was well represented on the 10-3A all-district baseball list.

After all, the Bobcats did finish with a 7-1 mark against district counterparts en route to the top seed and a share of the district championship.

However, Celina exceeded expectations and earned spots at nearly every position on the list this season.

"I don't know if we've ever done as good on it as we did on this one," said James Evans, Celina head coach.

Headlining Celina's selections was senior pitcher Colin Firmin, who was named the district's Most Valuable Player.

"Any time you have the MVP, it's a big deal," Evans said.

Firmin anchored the rotation for the Bobcats and helped carry his team into the postseason with a first-round matchup against Farmersville. In Game 1 of the series, Firmin tossed a complete game and surrendered just one run to earn the victory on the mound.

"[Firmin] is good at the plate and on the mound," Evans said.

Pitching behind Firmin for much of the season, No. 2 starter Mike Richardson didn't go unnoticed either. The senior was named Co-Pitcher of the Year with Bonham senior Ryan Woodruff.

"We're going to have to fill in the pitching," Evans said. "We're losing our top two pitchers."

In addition to having the district's MVP, Celina also boasts the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year this season. Senior first baseman Austin Hambrick, who was also named to the first-team all-state team recently, was honored for his production at the plate while junior shortstop Daniel Gerths was recognized for his defensive ability.

"The whole district has been a great one," Evans said. "I hate to get out of it."

With so much success from one team, it was only fitting that Evans and his assistants took home Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

"My guys work hard," Evans said. "They put in a lot of hard work. I give them all the credit."

Meanwhile, Junior Landon Lohmann and senior outfielder Ethan McCartney were each given spots on the first-team.

Senior catcher Tyler Joe Pena, junior Ridge Sandler, sophomore Connor Torbert and sophomore Tanner Davis rounded out the Bobcats on the list with the four players making the second team.

"We did really well on [the all-district list] this year," Evans said.

With three of the four Celina players earning superlative honors being seniors, Evans said his graduated players were vital in the team's accomplishments this past season.

"They played a big role in our success this year," he said.

The Bobcats can hang their hat on the number of returning starters, though. Three of the four infield positions return for next season with all three players named to the all-district list.

"We've got some good kids coming back next year," Evans said. "They'll be even better off after having another year under their belts."

Next year Celina will have new competition in its quest to duplicate this past season's success on the all-district list. The Bobcats will move into a five-team district with Argyle, Aubrey, Carrollton Ranchview and Frisco Lone Star.

Van Alstyne, Bonham, Commerce and Anna will now be part of separate districts.

"We'll have a good group of guys coming back," Evans said. "We should still be strong in a lot of areas."
