Armed man arrested near Hebron High School: Police not sure what caused 'strange behavior'

Published: Monday, July 16, 2012 3:47 PM CDT
A Plano man was arrested Monday morning after a family member notified police that the man was armed with a handgun, acting strangely and may be a danger to himself or others.

The man was arrested around 10:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of Hebron Parkway, said Officer David Tilley of the Plano Police Department. The man's identity has not been released, but Tilley said he was arrested without incident.

"At a little before 7:45 this morning, we received a 911 call from a woman in the 3100 block of Royal Sydney Court who said her son had made some threats against family members," Tilley said. "She was concerned for his safety and welfare because he wasn't acting 'right' and she didn't know if he was going to go out and cause harm to himself."

Tilley said the police set up a perimeter and began a search that included a helicopter from the Texas Department of Public Safety as well as additional officers from the DPS and Carrollton PD. The search grid included some heavily wooded areas, but the man was caught inside a business in the northeast corner of Hebron Parkway and Marsh Ridge Lane, Tilley said.

"One of our officers was contacted by a citizen advising there was a gentleman inside a retail store that was acting very strange," Tilley said. "A description of the man matched the person we were looking for. One of our officers was able to enter the business and approach the man from behind and take him into custody without incident."

The man's mother told police her son had said the police may have to shoot him if necessary, Tilley said. He added the man was armed with a handgun at the time of the arrest, but no shots were fired by the man or officer. The gun was taken without permission from the residence on Royal Sydney Court, which has led the man to be charged with theft of a firearm, Tilley said. The charge is a state jail felony which is punishable by 180 days to two years in jail, and a fine of up to $10,000.

Due to the close proximity to Hebron High School, extra security measures were taken to protect the school's staff and students, said Carrollton PD spokesman Jon Stovall.

"We had requested Hebron High School be locked down as a precaution while we were looking for the guy," Stovall said. "It's summer, but there are some staff and summer school classes in session. There is no indication that he was ever on school property."

Tilley said Plano officers were also set up near Prestonwood Baptist Church to prevent the man from crossing Marsh Lane and entering the campus.

No determination has been made whether the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or whether he was dealing with a medical condition, Tilley said.
