Soon-to-be fourth-grader Collyn Cornelious made a decision at the beginning of his third grade year last August--he was going to beat the goal of reaching 500 points in the Scholastic Reading Counts program at Zellers Elementary.

Not only did he beat his goal, but he reached over 500 points in just one year, becoming number one in reading at Little Elm ISD.

"I love to read," Cornelious said. "Reading is my favorite thing to do."

Scholastic Reading Counts is a program that combines reading and software-based reading assessments, encouraging reading among students in schools. After a book is read, students take a short, reading-level-appropriate quiz about the book.

Cornelious estimated that he's read over a 1,000 books, several of them "big books." He enjoys reading biographies the most, his favorite being one on Martin Luther King, whom he looks up to.

"I'm not scared to read any book," Cornelious said.

He's also not afraid to read more than one book at a time, which helped him reach his goal.

Cornelious plans to read over the summer and participate in the Little Elm Public Library's summer reading program. His new goal is to read as many books as he can when he goes into fourth grade this August.

"We've been proud of him all the time," Delores Jackson, his grandmother, said. "We're really proud because he loves to read. He's worked real hard."

As for his future when he grows up, Cornelious is considering an occupation surrounded in books.

"I might be a librarian when I grow up because I love to read," Cornelious said.
