Fireworks to light up skies over Main Street

Published: Thursday, June 14, 2012 11:24 AM CDT
Rockets will be seen blasting off over the middle of Rowlett soon.

The city of Rowlett will host its annual Fireworks on Main event from 5 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4 along Main Street in downtown Rowlett. The event will feature a mixture of live music, food, children’s activities, games and conclude with a fireworks display at dusk. There is no cost to attend the event and all parking is free.

“The main purpose of this event is to bring families together to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks, food and children’s activities,” said Sarah Morgan, Rowlett special events and marking coordinator. “This event adds to the community because it offers a convenient, local place for families to enjoy the Fourth of July with their neighbors.”

The event will kickoff at 5 p.m. with Texas Country band J.D. Cobb. The headline performer will be Blaze of Glory, a Bon Jovi tribute band.

“When we pick the entertainment we try and find family-friendly performers. The Texas Country seems to be really popular. This year we have two performers that are different so it will be more of a mixture than just country music,” Morgan said.

Among the foods that will be available for purchase at the event are brisket sandwiches, snow cones, nachos, funnel cakes and hot dogs. The children’s activities will include bounce houses, face painting, super trampoline, and game truck.

The music will end around 9:30 p.m., or dusk, when the fireworks are scheduled to light up the skies over downtown.

All activities will be held along Main Street in front of the library. Parking will be available at Coyle Middle School, the Rowlett Station DART lot, Herfurth Park, First Baptist Church and First Methodist Church on Main Street, and a shuttle will run from Rowlett High School. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available in the Rowlett City Hall parking lot, located at Skyline and Main Street.

“If someone is coming late we recommend using the shuttle service from Rowlett High School. They will be running all night,” Morgan said.

Main Street and Coyle Street will be closed from Skyline Drive to Commerce for the duration of this event.

Visit the city’s website for the most current parking and event information at www.rowlett.com/index.aspx?nid=780.

“We hope that residents of Rowlett and other communities will appreciate the opportunity to celebrate close to home in a friendly, neighborly environment,” Morgan said.

In conjunction with the city the event is also being sponsored by Lake Pointe Medical Center, Chick-fil-A, and Jason’s Deli. The city is also looking for additional sponsor and vendors that want to take part in the event. Interested parties should contact Sarah Morgan at smorgan@rowlett.com.
