Article:	Top court rejects portion of 'candy cane' case: Move by Supreme Court ends second phase of long-running case The Plano ISD "candy cane case" is one step closer to a resolution after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal made by the Liberty Institute. The case, which began when officials at Thomas Elementary refused to allow a student to distribute candy cane pens with a religious message, has been dragging on since 2003.
