Town dedicates new Public Safety Center

Published: Thursday, May 17, 2012 1:48 PM CDT
A dedication ceremony was held on May 5 to officially open the new Little Elm Public Safety Center with building tours given to those who attended. The new center is located in front of the Town Hall Center at 88 West Eldorado Parkway.

The Public Safety Center is a 42,000 square-foot facility, which houses both the Little Elm Police and Fire departments, boasts a jail, police and fire dispatch, sally port, juvenile/victim interview rooms, storage, evidence storage, emergency operations center and patrol officer and detective work areas.

The groundbreaking for the new central station was held in September 2010. Both departments were able to move into the facility in December 2011. Community Service Officer Esther Collins said that since moving in, the jail, which is the first jail for Little Elm, has booked over 30 people so far.

The building also includes accommodations to operate a future two company fire station, training rooms, bunker gear supply, exercise room and a living quarters for firefighters that includes a kitchen, day room and more.

Residents were able to tour the facility and see the inner workings of the new central station for both departments. The center was built to accommodate overcrowding issues and future staff growth in both departments.

"We grew so fast, we certainly outgrew where we were at," Police Chief Waylan Rhodes said.

At the ceremony, Fire Chief Joe Florentino gave the welcome to those who attended. Little Elm Town Council Member Richard Stevens gave the invocation, praying for the safety of those going out on calls. Rhodes gave a speech thanking all those involved with bringing the new center to Little Elm.

"This is the nicest facility I've walked into and not just because we're in it, but because it's really that nice," Rhodes said.

Little Elm Mayor Charles Platt spoke on why the center was built, thanking the residents and staff involved in the creation of the new facility.

"This is a great, great facility," Platt said.
