THE COLONY -- Natural disasters are nothing new to the city of New Orleans, but an earthquake which unleashes giant albino spiders terrorizing the residents? That'd be a first.
Such is the premise of an upcoming SyFy Channel original movie called "Arachnoquake," airing June 23, in which the Big Easy becomes a target for big trouble from big spiders. The film stars longtime The Colony resident Megan Adelle (known locally as Megan Climer).
Adelle plays 16-year-old Anabell, who is a member of the Blackwell family on vacation to New Orleans when the disaster strikes. Alongside Adelle, the film stars Tracey Gold of "Growing Pains" fame, Edward Furlong from "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," and Ethan Phillips, the holographic doctor from "Star Trek: Voyager." "Arachnoquake" is directed by Griff Furst, who also directed the SyFy original movie "Swamp Shark."
She first got into acting at the age of 14, working on small-budget, independent films in Dallas in addition to some modeling work, Adelle said. But as she grew older (she's now 21), Adelle learned that the Dallas area is a small market in terms of locally produced entertainment products, she said. Her acting talents soon drove her beyond Texas.
"The entertainment industry is growing a lot in Louisiana," she said. "From there, I moved out to L.A., where I've been traveling back and forth the past two and half a years."
However, Adelle has been back home in The Colony for the past six months. She returned to Texas in October 2011 for her sister's wedding, intending to stay through the holidays. But then the opportunity arose to work on "Arachnoquake" and she's stayed close to home ever since.
"I like it here. My whole family lives here in The Colony," she said. That family includes her parents, Everett and Kim Climer, and siblings Matthew, Heather, Ryan, Autumn, and Caitlin. "As much as I love L.A., it's so fast paced. It's so different from The Colony. Everyone needs to be somewhere constantly. The whole time I'm there I really miss home."
Adelle said she appreciates her hometown's small-town flavor compared to living on the California coast. A lot of people who grow up in small towns fantasize about moving on to the "big city" someday.
"But once you do, you want to come back. I love that this is my home," she said.
As for "Arachnoquake," which obviously involves a heavy dose of special effects to create giant, albino spiders, the most interesting part of the filming process was working with invisible monsters, she said.
"The film is about the spiders, and the entire time we're acting to something that's not there," Adelle said. "There's always special effects in movies but this was the entire thing. It was fun, definitely a challenge, but it was fun."
Adelle said "Arachnoquake" should be a fun movie for the audience, too, and that the acting talent in the film should draw plenty of eyeballs to the television.
"[The movie] has got some amazing actors in it. Edward Furlong is an amazing, well-known actor who makes the movie," she said. "Tracey Gold is an amazing woman, a strong individual. It's a really well-rounded cast with big names."
Adelle also can be seen in the 2011 version of "Straw Dogs," starring alongside James Woods, James Marsden and Kate Bosworth.
"Working side-by-side with great actors such as James Woods and Tracey Gold has been a dream come true," Adelle said, in a release promoting "Arachnoquake."
Working in the film industry, however, isn't all big names and promotions. It takes a heavy dose of patience and a tolerance for rejection.
"The auditioning process can take a while," Adelle said. "It's definitely stressful. Honestly, you lose more than you win. I'm auditioning constantly, several times throughout the week. When you actually book one, it's so exciting."
