Clemencich, Shepard win school board elections
By Conner Hammett, chammett@starlocalnews.com
Carl Clemencich and incumbent Jason Shepard have emerged victorious from today's two contested school board elections.
Clemencich, who was running for Place 2, won with 66 percent of the vote. His opponent, Alan Hurst, received 34 percent.
"Many thanks to the voters of Allen," Clemencich said shortly after hearing the results tonight. "It's my desire to serve the city well as a future board member, and I do thank [the voters] for their support."
The returning board member said he is happy to see his seat bring continuity to the board along with the fresh perspective of the two newly elected members.
"I'm excited, because we even have a workshop Monday night," he said. "so the work truly never stopped, and it doesn't."
A third seat, Place 1, was also expiring this year, but only one candidate, Susan Olinger, filed for the position. She said she is excited to get the learning process started as she looks toward taking her new seat.
"I look forward to working with [Clemencich and Shepard]," she said. "I think that will be a good mix on the board, the breadth of experience."
In an email sent Sunday morning, Hurst said he is grateful to all who voted for him and volunteered their time for his campaign.
"I'm not sure what plans God has for me now, but you haven't seen the last of me and my efforts to support the kids in Allen," he said.
A total of 1,565 residents, or 3.4 percent of registered voters, cast ballots in this year's AISD elections. In 2009, the last time Places 1, 2 and 3 were on the ballot, 3,735 residents, or 8.8 percent of registered voters, cast ballots in AISD's bond and uncontested board elections. In last year's school board elections for Places 6 and 7, 5.6 percent of voters came out to polls.
