If there is one thing Spencer Smith isn't afraid of, it's hard work and the upcoming changes to the Little Elm Public Library will offer him just that.
The Town of Little Elm has accepted Smith as the new director of the library, and Smith is already hard at work at getting the library prepared for the expansion in Town Hall.
"I'm just here to get to work and keep getting things prepared and ready to go," Smith said. "We're trying to make the library better every day."
"I like Texas," Smith said. "That's my favorite [place], that's why I'm here."
Smith received his bachelor's degree in International Studies from Texas State University in San Marcos. He went on to further his education at the University of North Texas where he received his master's degree to work in libraries. Growing up, Smith knew he wanted to work in a library, but he isn't sure why.
"I've worked in bookstores and libraries since I was a teenager and it just always was something I like," Smith said. "I like information and being able to help people find that information."
Before accepting the library director position in Little Elm, Smith has worked in the Fort Worth Public Library, Haltom City Public Library and a private business library.
"It's just a great job opportunity," Smith said. "I like the library here and that it's expanding. There's a lot of work to do. It's a smaller location, but it's growing."
Smith's main focus is to get the library ready for the big move once the expansion is complete and cleaning up the collection.
"I think I'm really lucky that I didn't have to fight for it. I think it's going to be great," Smith said. "I'm looking forward to making the library a great community location for the Town of Little Elm."
Smith said he doesn't have anything specific in mind for changes to the library. But he mentioned that his ultimate goal is to make the library the "first place on everybody's mind when finding information or entertainment."
"It's just the fresh start, the chance to get things done the right way the first time," Smith said. "It's almost like starting from scratch. I like working and I think there's a lot of work to be done, and that's one of the things that attracted me to this position."
Smith does plan to build on the many programs that are already implemented in the library. He said that there is a push to possibly bring chess back into the library, which they are working on.
There will be changes to the donation policy. Right now, the library has had so many donations of books, there is not enough time for the staff to sort them.
"We appreciate all the donations we've got, we just have so many," Smith said.
Although the library does not need more books, they will take donations of best-selling books, DVDs and monetary donations. Smith said when the library makes its move into the new space, they will reassess the policy and their collection.
Smith welcomes residents to stop by the library and meet him. He will also be attending the 14th Annual Trivia Contest next Tuesday at Lakeside Middle School. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.
"I'm looking forward to it," Smith said. "I've been very impressed so far by the Friends of the Library and all they've done."
Spencer is married and together they have a four-and-a-half-year-old son and 14-month-old twins.
