Nelson appointed to school finance committee

Published: Thursday, March 1, 2012 1:01 PM CST
Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has been appointed to the Joint Interim Committee to Study the Public School Finance System -- a panel that will make education funding recommendations to the next Legislature.

"As a former teacher, I recognize that education holds the key to our future. Even though Texas is faring better than most states in a difficult national economy, we face significant challenges in education funding that must be addressed in order to properly support our teachers and ensure that our students succeed," Nelson said. "No investment is more important to preserving Texas' success than our investment in education."

The committee, which consists of 11 state senators and 11 state representatives, will conduct a comprehensive study of the public school finance system in Texas. It was created through Senate Bill 1, 1st Called Session, 82nd Legislature.

Nelson has an extensive background in education. In addition to her time as a sixth-grade teacher in Tarrant County, she served two terms on the State Board of Education; is a lifetime member of the Parent Teacher Association; and founded adult literacy programs in Denton County.

She wrote the state law dedicating lottery proceeds to education; banned the use of minimum grade policies; returned physical activity to the school day in Texas elementary schools; and authored numerous pieces of legislation to improve the health of students.

Nelson represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties.

" I doubt that anyone in the Texas school system has more impressive credentials than Senator Jane Nelson. She has worked indefatigably to improve the education, health and physical condition of Texas schoolchildren. With actual experience as a teacher, she provides empirical knowledge of how the system works and ways to improve it. When you think about education in Texas; think Senator Jane Nelson. "
