Flower Mound
Annual fashion show
The Women of Flower Mound, a nonprofit women’s organization, has announced plans for its annual Spring Fashion Show Extravaganza to take place March 24.
The Women of Flower Mound is all about community. The organization hosts various fund raising events throughout the year to raise money and then give back to the community by also supporting for The Children’s Advocacy Center of Denton, Pennies for Paige and the Flower Mound Santa Cop Program, just to name a few.
Fashions this year will be from local stores: Apricot Lane, Banana Republic, Belk’s, Cavender’s, Charming Charlie, Coldwater Creek, Chicks Dig It… and Guys Do, too!, Jos A. Banks, Dress Barn, Heaven Sent Children’s Boutique, Ooh la la, and Silpada Jewelry.
Those who would be interested in being a model for this year’s fashion show should email acox@allegiancetitle.com. Entry tickets for models are $20, and they will be professionally styled with hair and make-up and have a ball in the process.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Celebrations Grand Ballroom on FM 407 in Highland Village. Tickets are $35 each.

Master gardener series
The Flower Mound Public Library will host the 2012 Denton County Master Gardener Association Spring Series at 7 p.m. March 28 and April 4, 11 and 25 at the Library, 3030 Broadmoor Lane. The free sessions are open to the public and will cover a variety of gardening topics including gardening with raised beds, drought proofing your home landscape, beekeeping and bees in the garden, and gardening in containers.
Each program is presented by a Master Gardener or a Horticulturalist specializing in that topic.

Library hosts program
The Flower Mound Public Library will host the presentation “Growing Tomatoes in Texas” given by vegetable expert Bill Adams at 7 p.m. March 19 at the library, 3030 Broadmoor Lane. Learn about tomato varieties and things to grow tomatoes successfully in Texas. Adams is a retired horticulture agent with thirty years’ experience at the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and is author of The Texas Tomato Lover’s Handbook. Registration is requested.

Easter programs set
Historic Flower Mound Presbyterian Church, Denton County’s oldest church, is celebrating the Easter Season with special worship services, music, a pancake supper and an Easter Egg Hunt.
Beginning Sunday, a six-week study called “Pausing on the Road to Jerusalem” will be presented during 9:30 a.m. Sunday school.
On April 1, Palm Sunday, Sunday school will be followed by worship and communion at 10:30 a.m.
On April 5, worship and communion start at 6:30 p.m. The highlight of the season will be on Easter, April 8, with Sunday school at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship and communion at 10:30 a.m. and an Easter Egg Hunt for the children following the service. All are welcome.

Fashion show scheduled
The Women of Flower Mound are planning the annual Spring Fashion Show Extravaganza. The event will take place at 1 p.m. March 24 at Celebrations Grand Ballroom in Highland Village.
The fashion show is a fund raiser in which proceeds go toward college scholarships that are awarded to Flower Mound high school seniors. More than $75,000 in scholarships have been awarded to date.
The organization is dedicated to community support. Local clothing stores are offering their fashions for the show, and local women will be solicited as models.
Tickets are $35 and $20 if you are a model.

Women of Flower Mound offer scholarship
The Women of Flower Mound organization is now accepting applications for its 2011-12 scholarship.
For an application visit www.womenofflowermound.org. Eligible applicants will be graduating seniors who are residents of Flower Mound. All applications must be received by March 19.
Free tax assistance offered for seniors
Flower Mound has recently partnered with AARP Tax Aide to ensure local seniors are receiving all the deductions and credits they are entitled to on their taxes this year. AARP volunteers will be available on from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through April 10 at the Shirley Voirin Social Senior Center, 2121 Cross Timbers Road. Any resident 50 years of age or older may use the free service by making a reservation in person at the senior center or by calling 972-874-6110 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays.
AARP Tax Aide is managed by the AARP Foundation and is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service to help people with low to moderate incomes.
MOMS Group seeks participants
The Southeast Flower Mound MOMS Group is looking for residents who live south of FM 1171 and east of FM 2499 to join the group. It offers monthly meetings, monthly newsletters informing members of the activities, meetings and other information, MOMS night out once a month, weekly playgroups, community service, such as Meals on Wheels and Children’s activities.

The Greater Lewisville Newcomers Club meets at 9:30 a.m. every third Wednesday of each month at Lewisville Church of Christ, 901 College Parkway in Lewisville.

Voices of Flower Mound sets rehearsals
The Voices of Flower Mound is a no-audition, mixed community chorus, directed by Mary McGuyer. Selections are normally popular tunes from radio, television, musical theater or movies, as well as seasonal favorites. Voices of Flower Mound performs major concerts in May and December each year, plus additional performances for special occasions such as July 4, Veterans Day, etc.
Rehearsals take place every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. in the choir room at Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church, 6101 Morriss Road.
The Voices of Flower Mound also has a junior choir, for ages 7 through middle school, which rehearses Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m. in the same location.

Lewisville
DCTA schedules public hearings
Denton County Transportation Authority has scheduled a series of public meetings during March and April to present the results of a recent community survey on transportation needs and to receive input on recommended service changes to take effect in August.
People who live, work or go to school in Denton County are invited to attend any of the scheduled meetings and provide additional feedback for consideration during the planning of the service changes.
The first round of public meetings will be held the week of March 5. These meetings will begin with an open house at 6:30 p.m. allowing residents to talk one-on-one with DCTA staff, followed by a presentation from DCTA representatives on survey results, ridership data and key findings. The second round of public meetings will be held the week of April 30 and will include a presentation of proposed service changes and plans to improve existing fixed-route and A-train service levels.
The first-round meeting in Lewisville will be held Thursday, March 8, in the City Council Chambers of Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church St. The second-round meeting in Lewisville will be Thursday, May 3, also at City Hall. Persons with hearing or sight interpretive service needs are asked to contact DCTA at least two business days in advance of the meeting at 972-221-4600 or dleggett@dcta.net.
Formed in 2002 and funded in 2003, Denton County Transportation Authority has been focused on an aggressive service implementation strategy to address the mobility needs of Denton County residents.

County hosts passport fair
The Denton County clerk’s office is hosting a Passport Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 10 in Denton to provide passport information to U.S. citizens and to accept passport applications. The Denton County clerk’s office is joining the Department of State in celebrating Passport Day in the USA 2012, a national passport acceptance and outreach event
U.S. citizens must present a valid passport book when entering the United States by air. U.S. citizens entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry must present a passport book, passport card, or other travel documents approved by the US. government.
Information on the cost and how to apply for a U.S. passport is available at travel.state.gov U.S. citizens may also obtain passport information by phone, in English and Spanish, by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1-877-487-2778.
Library sets activities
Family Craft Day will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11. Participants don’t need to bring any supplies. The event is held in the Cynthia Bennett Children’s Wing.
Craft-o-Rama is a craft time especially for 4th and 5th graders. The first session of 2012 will be held at 4:30 p.m. March 28. Space for each class is limited.
LegoMania! Will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25 in the Bennett Program Room. Creating with Legos takes place on the fourth Sunday of each month. Children under 6 years must be accompanied by an adult in the program.
Crafternoon for Teens will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 7. Space is limited and open to students in grades 6-12. Crafternoon is held the first Wednesday of the month at Lewisville Public Library’s Teen Point on the second floor of the library.
Teen Role Playing Sessions are held Monday nights. Lose yourself in another world on March 5 and 19, playing One for All: Régime Diabolique, and March 12 and 26 with the new game for 2012, Astra Imperious: Rogue Trader. All Role Playing Sessions are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Teen Point on the second floor of the library. Teens age 12-18 are welcome.
First Friday Fun! will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 2. Preschool children and their parents are invited to share the joy of reading in the Cynthia Bennett Children’s Wing of the Lewisville Public Library.
Wii Play for teens will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8. There will be lots of games and two active stations in the Bennett Program Room of the Lewisville Public Library.
Teen Spring Break movie break will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 14. Teens are invited to a screening of Thor in the Bennett Program Room of the Lewisville Public Library.
The Lewisville Public Library teen advisory group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15. Teens will be asked to help create the teen experiences available at the library. Pick up an application at the youth service desk, and come to the meetings on the third Thursday of the month.

Gerontologist to speak at VNA
Gerontologist Dee Wadsworth will speak on “Am I Losing my Memory? Tips and Tricks for Grievers” at the March 13 hospice family luncheon hosted by Ann’s Haven VNA.
The luncheon is from noon to 1 p.m. at the Denton Elks Lodge on 228 East Oak St. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling Molly Harrison, Ann’s Haven VNA bereavement coordinator, at 940-349-5900.
Ann’s Haven VNA hospice family luncheons offer supportive company from friendly and understanding people to individuals who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
Easter Bunny coming to Vista Ridge Mall
Grab your baskets, the Easter Bunny is hitting the trail and at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 16, he’ll be at Vista Ridge Mall, snuggled in his gazebo garden on the lower level near Dillard’s, ready to visit and pose for photos. He’ll be at the shopping center until April 7 when he hurries off to deliver eggs for Easter Sunday morning.
Hours to visit the bunny are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. Bunny visitors can choose to have a commemorative photo taken by one of the Bunny photographers. Photos start at $14.95.

Rotary to host golf tournament
The Lewisville Rotary Club will host its 14th annual “BIG FORE” golf tournament scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the Tour 18 Golf Club, 8718 Amen Corner in Flower Mound.
The annual tournament is the club’s major fund raising event for the year and all the proceeds benefit local charities in the area.

LLELA preschool program set
Preschoolers will discover wonders of nature at Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area’s Preschool Adventurers Program, to be held for six consecutive Fridays beginning March 30. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. The fee is $75 for all six sessions.
Children ages 3-5 years, along with an adult, will search for animal tracks, look for signs of spring, discover wildlife all around them, and explore the importance of trees, among other adventures. Each day’s adventure will include a craft activity, nature games, a hike along one of LLELA's trails, songs and storytime, as well as a snack. Younger tag-a-longs may also attend, with parental supervision. LLELA recommends that adventurers and their companions wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
Themes for the six sessions are:
* March 30: Nature Makes Sense (using our senses)
* April 6: Springing Up (signs of spring are all around us)
* April 13: What’s Wild? (recognizing the difference between wild and not wild)
* April 20: Meet the Trees (exploring all that makes trees special)
* April 27: Insect Investigators (discover insect homes and life cycles)
* May 4: Wet Wonders (pond exploration)

Teen Court volunteer application deadline set
The Lewisville-Flower Mound Teen Court will hold a volunteer training session from 9 a.m. to 3 pm. Saturday, April 14, at the Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 West Main St. Registration deadline is Thursday, April 12.
Youth ages 13 through 17 or still in high school are eligible to volunteer as attorneys, bailiffs, judges, jurors or check-in clerks. Lunch will be provided along with door prizes for attendance and participation.
Teen Court is an alternative, voluntary program that offers young offenders an opportunity to make restitution for an offense in lieu of a fine. They are court-ordered to perform community service hours at a non-profit agency, as well as serving as a Teen Court juror.
Instead of paying a fine for the offense, successful completion of the court order dismisses the case from their record. By bringing the youth offender before a jury of peers, the program seeks to prevent unlawful behavior in the future while educating the offender and volunteers about the judicial system. All roles in Teen Court are filled by teenagers, except for an adult judge and a few adult volunteers.
Teen court is held twice a month on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. High school seniors who volunteer can earn a $1,000 scholarship for their participation in the program. Teen Court is open to the public and can be observed by anyone.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful is giving out free CFL light bulb four packs to Lewisville residents to help reduce the use of electricity in Lewisville. First Choice Power awarded KLB a $2000 “Reduce Your Use” Grant earlier this year that makes this program possible. To get the free CFL bulbs, stop by the office on 101 W. Main St. Suite 102 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Light bulbs are on a first come, first serve basis. Must be a Lewisville resident and show proof of residency (driver’s license, utility bill) to receive your light bulb pack. Limit one pack per Lewisville address.

TV series seeks participants
“My First Place,” an HGTV series, is looking for first-time homebuyers and their real estate agents in the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area.
The show is looking for fun, high-energy people who are just starting the home-buying process for their first place and would like to share their story with HGTV. Taping takes place this fall and winter. Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic buyers with a unique story to tell and a desire to share their experiences. Singles, couples and families are all invited to apply.
Candidates who complete taping will receive a monetary gift as part of the show and also a DVD copy of their episode to document their first home- buying experience for all time.
