Test your knowledge at annual Trivia Contest
By Emily Hill, ehill@acnpapers.com
What is the approximate population of Oregon? Who was president of the U.S. when Uncle Sam first got a beard?
If you answered 3.8 million and Abraham Lincoln, then you are ready for the 14th annual Trivia Contest and Fundraiser. The Little Elm Friends of the Library will host the event with food, trivia and prizes on Feb. 21 at Lakeside Middle School, 400 Lobo Lane.
Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with barbecue, pizza, candy and drinks. Outside food is not permitted at the event.
Teams of five to eight players will compete against each other. Judges will ask the teams eight rounds of questions that include categories such as geography, history and entertainment, among others. The table who wins the Trivia contest will receive the Trivia trophy and a cash prize.
Last year, Team Schmitty's took home the Trivia trophy, winning the grand prize of $500. They answered 58 out of 64 questions correctly, staying in the top four places throughout all the eight rounds.
Prizes will also be given for Best Costumes and Team Spirit. A raffle and a silent auction will be held at the contest between rounds.
The Friends of the Library are currently searching for more adult volunteers to help with the event.
"We have a lot of student volunteers but several of our adult volunteers are not able to [help]," Cathy Wood, Friends event coordinator, said.
New to the event this year will be the presentation of Citizen of the Year. The award will be presented at the contest because bad weather caused the Holidaze event, where the award is usually presented, to be cancelled. The recipient is an avid participator in Trivia.
Regular tables are $80 pre-registration each and $90 at the door. Regular tables will be available on a first come-first served basis.
VIP tables are $250 for a table up to eight members. Pre-registration is required. Registration for VIP tables will be taken until Feb. 14. Any tables not paid for will be forfeited.
The VIP tables offer the choice of a book to be donated in the group's name to the library and the table decorated in the book's theme. Special VIP waiters/waitresses will be assigned to VIP tables. These tables will also receive one two-topping 13-inch pizza, a basket of popcorn and a drink for each team member.
Teams who purchase a VIP table will have their names printed in the Trivia 2012 program and on the event greeting sign. Wood said on average, about 40-45 tables are registered for the event.
Last year the contest raised $10,000. Wood said the contest has proven successful in the past in raising funds for the library.
"We're very proud of it," Wood said. "We think it's working very well."
The funds raised will go toward the purchase of computer programs, reference books and more. The group has set aside a good portion of the money raised from previous contests to go toward the library expansion and a possible future matching grant for the library.
Registration forms can be found online at www.littleelm.org/library under "Friends of the Library," or in the Little Elm Public Library, 100 West Eldorado Parkway.
