Police arrest prowler suspect

Published: Tuesday, February 14, 2012 11:30 AM CST
THE COLONY -- The Colony Police Department has taken a suspect into custody in connection with a string of recent prowler incidents in The Legends subdivision.

Anthony Huynh, 17, of The Colony, turned himself into police on Saturday on an unrelated charge and later confessed to three of the prowler incidents -- specifically those on Tucson, Sunrise, and Wexley.

The investigation remains ongoing as The Colony police are still working to determine what charges will be filed against Huynh. Also, detectives learned during the course of the investigation that other individuals are aware of Huynh’s activities and either failed to report them to police and/or assisted in commission of the acts, according to a release. TCPD encourages those individuals to come forward and explain their actions before possible charges are filed against them.

Still, TCPD spokesman Lt. Darren Brockway said residents could take some comfort knowing a suspect is in custody.

"I think they can rest easier but not let their guard completely down. They still need to lock their doors, especially at night," Brockway said.

According to the release, Huynh told detectives that he never intended to harm anyone, and that substance abuse and addiction to those substances were the contributing factors for his behavior.

As for what substances the suspect was abusing, "he only stated alcohol and 'other drugs,' but stated he was intoxicated during each incident," Brockway said.

Huynh turned himself in for an outstanding warrant stemming from an incident on Feb. 2 at The Colony High School. He was charged with "improper photography or visual recording."

Police credit the cooperative effort between residents and law enforcement for taking a suspect into custody in connection with the prowler incidents. The Colony Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division received numerous tips about the incidents, which generated leads and allowed detectives to gather evidence that Huynh committed at least some of the alleged acts, stated the release.

Brockway said the tips were mostly anonymous and said that the defendant matched the description of the suspect and was seen in suspicious circumstances, which police were able to verify.

The department has been investigating numerous incidents of prowler activity since August 2011 in which a suspect has entered homes through unlocked doors in the early morning hours. Police are still working to determine the exact number in total but offense reports indicate at least six confirmed locations since August. Huynh confessed to only three.

One of the outstanding incidents occurred on Turner Street, in which a resident fired a gunshot in the direction of a suspect in his backyard. Brockway confirmed that Huynh has not confessed to being involved in that incident or any of the others in August beyond Tucson, Sunrise, and Wexley. "We are still investigating," Brockway said.
