Williams highlights North’s 49-14 win with kick, punt return

McKinney North’s (1-1) decision to move Brylen Williams from quarterback to free safety and special teams returner paid its first dividends on Thursday, as he returned a kick 88-yarsds for a touchdown and scored again on a 42-yard punt return in a 49-14 win over Bryan Adams.
Williams also returned a kick 50 yards to set up a Bulldogs scoring drive that ended with running back Trey Smith running in the first his three touchdowns. Smith ended with 19 carries for 70 yards.
“Big game for [Williams],” said Mike Fecci, North head coach. “That’s the thing about him is we’re able to use that guy in a lot of different fashions, and he’s a very athletic kid and he’s dangerous on special teams. He’s playing great on defense and we’re really excited about that and real happy for him.”
Williams quickly equalized by returning the ensuing kick, and Walling settled down to drop a pass right over wide receiver Evan Jones shoulder for a 49-yard touchdown reception and 14-7 lead.
Adams tied it up again by leading off the second quarter with a scoring drive capped by a 10-yard scoring run by quarterback Jalen Jordan, but the Bulldogs wouldn’t allow another touchdown and cruised the rest of the way.
Walling completed 6-of-15 passes for 116 yards on the night.
The Bulldogs defense got in the action as well with two interceptions. Justin DeLeon had the first, which he returned 43 yards to set up a four-yard touchdown run for Selwyn Smith, and Dominque Parish nabbed the second late in the fourth quarter to allow the Bulldogs to run down the clock.
The win has North back in high spirits after losing its season opener to McKinney Boyd.
“That’s exactly what you need to do,” Fecci said. “When you come off a tough loss like we had last week, all you want to do is to get back on the grass. This is a blessing for us, God’s been good to us and we’ll just hopefully continue with what we’re doing.”
