LITTLE ELM - Despite the heat, Papa Murphy's in Frisco on Aug. 9 hosted its second Community Appreciation Night of the year benefiting the Little Elm Food Bank, Little Elm Box 620 and KaliMarie Looper, the daughter of Aubrey firefighter Marty Looper.
Papa Murphy's offered customers a coupon for $3 pepperoni pizzas and $3 off any pizza at any size.
"It's a good cause," customer Shellep Goodman said.
"It was less than last time, but it could have been very well the weather," Julie Moore, co-owner of Papa Murphy's, said.
The Carter BloodCare Mobile Unit also was at the site to collect blood donations benefiting KaliMarie, the 8-month-old daughter of Looper and his wife, Debra, who is a member of the Aubrey Fire Department Auxiliary. KaliMarie suffers from Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Six blood donations were made out of seven attempts.
"The Carter Blood people have been running very low and had to cancel some of the drives because of the heat," Moore said. "Anything anyone can do is very much wanted and needed. More accidents occur during the summer time than any other time so it's very critical for them to have a blood supply."
Box 620 helped with the event, selling raffle tickets for their Raffle for Rehab Open House event on Oct. 1. Among other raffle prizes, the grand prize is a 50-inch LG 1080P Plasma HDTV with Samsung Sidebar. Tickets are $5 for one ticket and $20 for five tickets. Raffles can be purchased from now until the event.
"We truly appreciate all that they do for us," Brandon Gerard, council member and Box 620 member, said.
The event collected a large, overflowing box full of nonperishable food items for the LEAFB. Baskin Robbins also gave out samples of its ice cream to customers. Pizza samples were given out during the event, which were provided by Capital One Bank of Little Elm.
"We just want to thank Capital One and Baskin Robbins for having samples and Box 620 and the firefighters and officers that make it happen on a daily basis at keeping us safe," Moore said.
