Baylor Regional Medical Center set to expand

Published: Friday, July 15, 2011 10:21 AM CDT
Hospital officials at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine have announced the construction of a new $100.5 million, five-story patient tower and expansion. The new tower is expected to open in sometime during the summer of 2013.

"We're working hard to keep the project on track and provide the kind of care the community needs," said T. Douglas Lawson, president of Baylor Medical Center at Grapevine. "This community is growing so rapidly that we feel like we need to keep expanding our facilities to keep up with the pace of the growth in this area."

Specifically, Lawson said, the improvements will center around the oncology department, cardiovascular center, the spine center and a comprehensive women's center.

"I'm very excited about all of the improvements but, after these improvements, the out-patient care we will be able to provide for cardiovascular patients will be much better," Lawson said. "We plan to consolidate all of those services down near the emergency department so that we can treat cardiovascular patients quicker and more efficiently."

Lawson added that the services for women and children will also be expanded.

"We are also expanding our ability to care for critically-ill newborn babies," he said. "We deliver about 3,000 babies every year and we have one of the best facilities in the metroplex when it comes to the care of premature babies."

Officials say that, if all goes according to plan, the expansion project will be finished just about the time that most of the road construction is finished in and around the hospital, which is located off State Highway 114.

"All the highway construction around us has definitely made this project a challenge but we've been working very closely with highway officials to make this go as smoothly as possible," Lawson said. "Naturally, it's going to be a little inconvenient for a while but, in the end, it will be worth it."

Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine is a full-service, fully-accredited not-for-profit hospital serving residents in more than 20 cities throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth region. The 276-bed hospital offers advanced medical services for cardiovascular services, women's services, oncology, neurology, spine care, orthopedics, diagnostic imaging, neonatal intensive care, intensive and emergency care.

During its past fiscal year, Baylor recorded more than 2.6 million patient encounters, $3.8 billion in total operating revenue, $4.4 billion in total assets and $513.5 million in community benefit. Baylor's network of more than 260 access points includes 26 owned/operated/ ventured/affiliated hospitals, 23 joint ventured ambulatory surgical centers, 50 satellite outpatient locations, four senior centers and 156 HealthTexas physician clinics.

Joel T. Allison, FACHE, president and CEO of Baylor Health Care System, agreed.

"The new patient tower at Baylor Grapevine will build on the hospital's commitment to providing quality care in a patient and family-centered environment," he said. "Northeast Tarrant County and the 26 cities we serve continue to grow in both population and health care needs."

The expansion will include 48 beds (with space for 60 additional beds), nine emergency department rooms and four additional operating suites. It will also enhance specialty areas such as cardiovascular services, women's services and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

"Baylor values our partnership with the community and this tower and expansion affirms our commitment to providing the most advanced care in the region," Lawson said.

Ron Carter, chairman of the board of trustees at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine, was quick the credit the staff and others at hospital.

"Improvements in quality, safety, service and care received at the hospital by the staff, leadership team and physicians on our medical staff have made this expansion project possible," Carter said.
